Where do we start?

Hello all, my name is Tammy and dh is Mike. We have been battling infertility for more than 4 years now and are finally considering using a donor. Just a little bit about our history: we tried conceiving for 2 years and was not able to get any help from a dr. Finally a co-worker suggested her dr so we went to see. He immediately suggested we test dh. We did and found thats where the problem is. He has low count and low motility. We pretty much abandoned the idea of having children but now I am 30 years old and desperately want to have a baby. I just recently had surgery to remove endometriosis and am ready to start trying again. I have my follow up appt with my dr on January 6 and dh and I wanted to discuss using a sperm donor. Can anyone provide me with any information or maybe questions that I need to ask my dr? Also, for those that have gone this route what kind of pricing could we be looking at? I appreciate any info anyone can give us, thanks!

Thanks Sheryl. I have looked at the sites and am not really finding much info about where to start. Maybe Im looking in the wrong place. But what I'm seeing is just basically a bunch of links to other websites for sperm banks. I guess what I am wanting is how does the process work? From what we know I have no fertility issues so is it as simple as just choosing a donor and than injecting the sperm in me or is it more complicated than that?

It can be as easy as that.

Wow Sheryl that was a lot of info. Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. We have just tried for so long and I'm tired of not getting anywhere. I am anxious to see my dr. on the 6th and get all of this started. I will keep updates on how and what is going on. Thanks again for the info.

My first question would be how low are DH's counts--would IUI work for you using his sperm?

Im not sure if we could use his or not. His last count was 2 years ago and they were 1.2 million. From my understanding that is very low, normal is 30-50 million I believe. He doesnt have a prob using a donor he just wants a child. I just hope no matter what route we go we can afford it. If not I guess we remain with the one child we have that is not biologically dh's.

Your 3 babies look adorable by the way!

Sounds like you guys are in about the same boat as us. I have a son who is not dh's and we would like to have one between us. Dh has a very low count with even lower motility. Our only option would be IVF which is never going to be in our budget.

Donor sperm and IUI could be in our budget. However, we are going to do the free way first which is a known donor with at home insemination. This way sounds kinda weird to some. However, we also just want a baby and can not afford to go broke before the little tyke even comes out...

I understand where your coming from. We considered doing the same thing but we couldnt find a donor that would just make a donation. I wouldnt care to pay someone but they want more than just money, if you know what I mean. But it doesnt seem fair that there are so many in the world that can just spread their legs and have babies. Im sorry if that sounds mean but I have a family member that its that simple for and than she dont take care of her kids. I wish you luck in the new year with your journey!
