Charting and cervical position?

I've just started charting for the first time (I'm hoping to try for a boy, we are TTC#3 starting in July). Anyway, I see that a lot of people are temping, checking CM and also cervical position. I know this probably sounds dumb, but how do you check cervical position and what are you looking for?

ETA: What is the difference between a Basal thermometer and a regular digital thermometer? I don't have a basal one so I've just been using my regular digital one that does measure 1/10's of a degree, is that okay?
