question about high pre-o temperatures

As a little background before I jump to my question, this is my third cycle charting. The first was two+ years ago, and I became pregnant on cycle 1. Now I am on cycle 2 for child #2.
In my first cycle two years ago and my last cycle, my pre-o temperatures were mostly in the 96s, and a few low 97s. For this cycle, my temperatures never went below the coverline of last month's chart, and have since gone up to the 98s. I only saw 98s once pregnant with my son. I did have a period, and have taken several negative pregnancy tests.
I guess my question is whether it's normal to vary so much cycle to cycle? And in comparing cycles, does it matter that this cycle's temps have never dropped below the coverline of last month's chart? I am not sick, so I don't know why my temps would be up. And I do not seem to be pregnant.
I'm thinking I shouldn't worry too much about the variation and just look for the spike for ovulation. But it does have me wondering. Any light you could shed would be great!
