Spotting vs Flow

I am trying to figure out my cycle and have begun seeing a doctor to address its irregularity and our difficulty conceiving.

I had been have been managing my irregular cycle with success using the Nuvaring but stopped using that when we decided to TTC in the Spring of last year.

Untreated my cycle seems to range 28-34 days with a 4-5 day flow and then during the time I would expect to be ovulating I have some light spotting and at times severe bleeding... this irregular (and at times unmanageable) bleeding generally contains large clots, most certainly requires a tampon and a pad and sometimes results in surges of blood that come out of nowhere and can even cause me to feel faint. Then the spotting/surging can disappear as quickly as it came. My normal 4-5 day flow is intense but a much more consistent flow when compared to these crazy flare-ups.

I have tracked my cycle for a while but not with a great degree of detail. Today I began using Fertility Friend and struggle to know how to quantify this type of irregular activity when charting my cycle. I don't even know how to check CM with all of this bleeding.

So, any suggestions on how to chart when dealing with my type of issues?

FYI - I am 36, have no children, have been TTC for 6 months. I am working with my doctor but have a hard time getting the answers to ALL of the questions as some are more pressing than others. So far I have done a CD21 blood test which showed very low progesterone levels which was followed by a very late period (I think I started CD1 today). I am scheduled to have a transvaginal ultrasound this week and a CD3 bloodtest whenever CD3 comes around.

I'm glad that you're charting, along with the other things you're doing to try to get things figured out.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful response. I am buying the bbt thermo today and will start that asap - I am really looking forward to getting some more valuable info on what is going on. I will absolutely talk to doc about blood tests as I don't think he I getting that my day 21 was a shot in the dark considering all I have going on. I will certainly stay on the boards and keep you posted.

Btw - your user name...are you a vegetarian? I ask because I am (for 21 years) and have read some info on the impact of soy when ttc. Any thoughts?

Some docs go by the numbers and don't really understand the female cycle, at least not the way we understand since we live those cycles, and since we're charting and making personal observations. Hopefully you have a doc who is open to observations, questions, and suggestions. It's your body, after all!

Yes, I'm a lifelong vegetarian. I don't like the anti-soy hype, and imo, much of it is hogwash. People "confuse" natural estrogens and their effects with the synthetic estrogens that our bodies are exposed to in the animal foodchain. Any food eaten to excess will have detrimental effects, of course. Balance is the key. I used soy during both of my pregnancies, and still incorporate it (probably not enough!) and need to up it a bit for its benefits as I edge closer to the menopausal time of my life!
