The women in my family have a history of chronic miscarriages. I've asked my OB-GYN if she can think of any reasons for this and her advice was to talk to my mother. I have asked my mom about this issue, but she refuses to tell me. Long, irrelevant story. I've also tried looking on the Internet, but haven't had any luck. So, I thought I'd ask iVillage.

The problem showed up first with my maternal grandmother, who was born in 1919. She married in her mid twenties. She had eight pregnancies but seven ended in miscarriage. My mother was born in 1950. My mother also married in her mid twenties and also had several miscarriages. She had a test in 1980 to determine why she wasn't able to carry the pregnancies to term. I've been told the name of the test, but I can't remember it. I do know the doctor cuts slits into your torso and then thread tubes through the slits. Air is blown into your body and somehow they can tell what is causing the problem. I was conceived a couple of months after this test was done and my sister was born when I was 18 months old.

I'm 26 and although I'm not currently trying to get pregnant, I would like to have children someday. I'd like to find out if there's a genetic condition or some kind of defect and if there's anything I can do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome,

I'm sorry to hear about all the issues with m/c in your family.

Thanks. I do have a good OB-GYN. I actually just switched from another doc to her.

I'm not freaking out about it or anything, I'd just like a big family. I'm not in a relationship right now but am casually dating. If I spend several years miscarrying like my mom and Nana did, I'll be in my mid thirties before I have even the one child. So, that's why I'm concerned.

By the way, what is Chet? I'm furmom to Elvira, whom I named after my Nana. She's a Guinea Pig. She's also a Grandpa's Girl. She started screaming when I tried to pick her up from sitting next to my Dad. I've had her for almost two years now (her birthday was actually the 18th) so I know how to pick her up and I know I wasn't hurting her. She just happens to think my Dad is a saint and everything wonderful and I'm evil. ;)

Ouch.

Elvira sounds like a sweetie.

Ches is an 8 yo Choc Lab/Chesapeake who just came into our home a year ago.

My parents have three dogs and two cats. Snuggles is our oldest. We're not sure what he is, but he looks like a mop.
