Decision to move onto IVF?

Hi everyone,

This is my 1st time posting in this section... My doctor thinks we should move onto IVF, and advice from you ladies would be appreciated! We have MFI - counts pre varicocle surgery were pretty "ideal" for IUI, but post surgery, counts are WAY worse. I just had my 1st IUI and the counts were less than 1mm. Obviously that was a negative. Wondering if anyone else here was in my situation and what made you decide to do IVF.

I have been very fortunate with IVF. My dh and I have very similar demographic info as you as well as diagnoses. Our doctor when he met us, recommended that we skip IUI and go right to IVF. I was shocked. We had only been trying for about 3 months and had landed at the U of I fertility department nearly by accident. It was just shocking....I thought they would say go home, try some more. Your young, your jumping the gun. Instead...MF infertility...very difficult to treat...do IVF. One year from the time that we had our first appointment I had a son in my arms. I am so glad that we moved ahead to IVF; and while I have had a lot of bad luck in my life...IVF has been good to us. Good luck

Thanks for your response - would you mind sharing the details of your MFI? Also - Univ of Illinois? I'm in Chicago (per my screen name, so I guess that's obvious)

You can read some about what our path was in my siggy and as you can see IVF was very kind to us. My DH also has the MFI trifecta with count, motility and morphology issues. His counts for my IUIs were 14, 7 and 30 million respectivly. So we were still in the ok zone for IUI but none worked out. We had tons of sucess using ICSI in our IVF cycle. Ten of the eleven eggs ICSI'ed fertilized and all of them grew past day 3 when sperm start contributing to the growth. I know it's a super hard decision to move on to IVF, good luck!

It was so long ago, I actually had to ask my husband! He said that his count (and this seems right to me) was 11 million, motility 50% and morphology 3%. We also did ICSI and we ended up with 10 embryos initially. Three did not develop as they'd hoped. We ended up with seven 5 day grade A blastocysts. It really doesn't get better than that in IVF. We transferred one and became pregnant. We froze 6. Since that time we have done IVF three more times. Each time we have transferred one embryo, each time we have become pregnant. One of my children died at one month old from a virus called CMV. And one of my pregnancies was terminated at 12 weeks due to Trisomy 13 when the doctors deemed the baby to be incompatible with life. Neither of these disorders is hereditary, but there is a SLIGHTLY higher risk of Trisomy 13 when ICSI is used with IVF. Very small. One in 12,000 births. I am currently pregnant for the fourth time via IVF and still hoping for a second child. Always, always always grateful for my first.

Your history kinda sounds like mine. I have LP defect and cervical stricture too. My DH has the same sperm trifecta but its not due to varicoceles but b/c he had a vasectomy reversal almost 3 yrs ago. We tried IUIs and did get lucky but lost our angel due to a chromosomal disorder. After genetic testing and healing from the D&C we tried more IUIs. No luck. So we're moving into IVF w/ ICSI now. I WISH so hard we had done this first. Maybe even before the reversal. Usually people are daunted by the cost of IVF, but I can tell you that we've spent more than the cost of one IVF cycle with nothing but a long roller coaster ride to show for it. When you have so many "small" problems stacked against you...it just seems like it doesn't work out the way it "should".
GL to you.

Chi-gal10..

So sorry to note you have to end up here eventhough I must add that the ladies here are outstanding when it comes to support especially since most of us have ended up here for a myriad of reasons including some of what you may be going through.

Like you, we have MFI (don't have all the numbers handy) but motility (forward projection) has been really bad...progressively so. So we did two IVF (1 fresh, 1FET) cycles in 2009 (both BFN), got frustrated after all the $$ spent, wondered if the RE should not have started us with IUI instead and after lots of roller coasters, we are back where we began: Fresh

Me (37), DH (39) - TTC #1 Our Angels (twins): '01; Our Angel (singleton): '02 - All conceived naturally. HSG - 7/08; Hysteroscopy - 8/08; Laparoscopy '01 1st IVF w ICSI - Mar '09; BFN - Protocol: Lupron, Menopur, Follistim, hcg Novarel, PIO sesame o
