Estrogen level too high to start IVF Meds?

Good Afternoon,

I can't even begin to tell you how fustrated I have been. I finally got my period 21 days late (my body has been stressed due to knowing I will be starting IVF treatment). I went for blood and sono this morning expecting a call this afternoon from the nurse to tell me to start my meds. Well, I got my call (not from the nurse) and she told me that my estrogen level is too high to start the injections. My period started yesterday. I remember that I was told that the meds haveto be at the beginning of your period and no later than the 3rd day! So, this girl who called me from the doctors office told me that I have-to take a re-test on Friday to see if the levels went down. She said that the estrogen level may have something to do with the cyst that is on my ovary? I never heard of this.

Has anyone ever had an estrogen level problem and couldn't start their meds? I mean, isn't there meds to take to control estrogen level? I don't understand what's happening here. Is this common?

Any answers would be very helpful. Thank you for listening..

I actually think it's really good to ask a lot of questions from your doctor. It's your health and you your body, so you are the best advocate for you that you will ever get!!! :)

Good luck!!

Hi Caryn! No, I haven't heard of them. I am currently seeing Dr. Brenner in Melville. I am going to see what happens after I take the bcp's and prey it works. But I will keep those docs in mind just in case! Thank you so much!

Have you been to Dr. Lydic or Dr. Bronson at Reproductive specialists of NY in Stony Brook? One of my friends really liked them...I'm waiting to hear more from another friend.

Happy to be here =) I know how stressful and frustrating it can be. A friend of mine that went through IVF lives in the NYC area, I'll check with her and see if she has any RE recommendations.

Hopefully in 3 weeks that cyst is gone, your E2 is down and you're off to the races. Keeping everything crossed for you!

Hi Caryn,

Thanks for the support! Means so much. I really feel like I'm going through the ringer but I can't stand these doctors that think they know it all and they don't. I will exhaust every possibility to be pregnant!

I am going Thursay to get the script for bcp, then I go back in three weeks (I think) for another blood test and sono. I have already been to three different RE's in my area and I'm exhausted for looking for the right one. But if I have-to, I'll go to Manhattan. I'm from Long Island, NY.

I'm not the "yes doctor" type. Not that I don't respet them, I do, I just don't think they are god so they have no right to. :-)

Did he give any reasons as to why he thinks your "eggs aren't functioning"? High E2 levels can be from diminished ovarian reserve but with a cyst present you can't tell that for sure. You would have to shrink the cyst and recheck levels.

I'm sorry you've been through the RE ringer. Do you have more RE's in your area that you could research? You can't tell anything about egg quality until they have been removed from your body, combined with sperm and see how cell division happens. If he's trying to tell you he can tell what your egg quality is from a high E2 on CD3 he's full of it.

Good for you for pushing for the BCPs. I hope they shrink the cyst and you get to move forward with stims. I also asked to do things in my protocol that my doctor wasn't use to. It is a good sign that your doctor listened to you though. how long will you be on them before he wants to re-scan and do b/w?

Thanks for responding and making me feel better.

Well, I took the test again today and my RE called to let me know that the estrogen was high again. He said that in his medical opinion, he feels that my eggs are not functioning and he doesn't think that I am going to respond to the IVF meds. I told him that I heard (through you guys) that birth control pills helps the estrogen level and I would like to try that first and then get on the IVF meds to see if I respond or not. He hesitently agreed. I feel like this: Yes, you may be a doctor but it's not a fact that my eggs aren't functioning. We don't know unless we find out and go through the motions.. This is the 3rd RE I've been to as well. So, I see him on Thursday and he will give me a script for the bcp.

It just seems like I have no luck at all. I am 40 yrs. old and want a child.

I know it is something that is really disappointing, but it does happen occasionally.
