IVF Consult Questions...

Hi! I guess I'm moving on to IVF, so I thought I'd introduce myself. You can see my siggy, but basically we have MFI (low motility). We have had nine unsuccessful IUI's-- mostly because they were completely covered under my insurance plan, but we have no coverage at all for IVF. Anyway, enough is enough, so we are moving on. I usually post over at the Infertility board, so my question is X-posted there. =)

I'm having my IVF consult with the RE on Friday. I'm trying to get together a list of questions to ask so that I feel like my hour is well-spent. Is there anything I need to for sure ask about? Is there anything you wished you had known/asked about before you started an IVF cycle? I'm just getting a bit nervous about Friday and I feel like I need to get my thoughts together.

TIA!

I haven't been through IVF (yet), but it did take me 3 doctors until I found one I felt comfortable with. You've probably already been through a lot of this, because of your IUIs, though. I would want to know what kind of protocol they want to put you on, and why. What their IVF success rates are for your age range, and what, if any additional tests they want you on.

Some of the REs I spoke with put everyone on bcp so that their cycles lined up and they were doing ER all at a time and transfers at another. I didn't like this, because I felt like the dr. and embryologist would be more likely to be busy at that time and not others. My insurance covers nothing, so I wanted to make sure I was happy with what I was paying for, even if it meant shelling out $200 a few times for appointments.

The in cycle monitoring was really important to me too. Are they checking blood hormone levels periodically? How many u/s to check on follicles, check for progesterone levels after, etc.

The questions I wrote up when I was starting the RE interview process:
Any financial incentives for this clinic? What are your costs?
What kind of monitoring do you do during a cycle/after a + test?
How many embryos would be transferred?
How long do you keep patients before releasing to OB?

There were others, too, but most related to our 0 sperm count issues. Good luck, and let me know if you come up with anything else!

Some clinics take time off every year to close down, so no IVF cycles can be done then. Others run continuously all year round. I'd ask that. Also, ask if the lab does 5 day transfers. Many do, some don't. How many do they recommend transfering for someone who is your age? What is their rate of multiples? (And, for yourself, I'd think about how ok you are with multiples). Who do you call if you have questions? How quickly do they get back to you? What time is the monitoring every morning (you may know this if you already did IUI's there).

Just a few thoughts. Good luck!

Hi, we did 2 IVF cycles.

I loved my clinic - opened 365 days a year.
