My Intro- total newbie!

Hi, all. I wanted to introduce myself and hopefully find a place where I could obsess about this scary journey I am about to embark on with other women going through the same thing. I am 39 (40 in august...shudder!) and my husband of 2 years will be 42 next month. He has a 21 year old son from a previous marriage. I waited to be a mom until I found "the one". I'm terrified I waited so long. When it didn't happen "naturally" we went to see my OBGYN, went in to have a cyst removed on my ovary and a d & c due to polyps. Found out while getting my stitches out by an offhanded comment from my OBGYN...they had to remove my one fallopean tube, and oh by the way, the other one is useless too. I was devistated.

So we started all the IVF pre-requisite testing at one center, only to find out that my insurance covers MUCH more at another center, so we have our consultation there this coming wednesday. As I was supposed to start the IVF cycle in April, I'm hoping they will say the same at the new center.

I am TERRIFIED. Scared of all the injections, procedures, and hormonal changes I will be forced to deal with, but mostly I am scared of the failure. After years of hearing "don't worry, women have babies well into their 40s with no problem!" , seeing the RE pull up that damned chart and showing my the success rates for a 39 year old is around 20%....ugh.

Sorry for the long post, but I know I will be on here OFTEN, lurking and posting, and hoping to receive and give support, I figured a comprehensive intro was in order :)

Hope to have some "Cycle buddies" and I will be praying for all of you as I continue to pray for the one thing I always wanted...

Tracey :)

I am new too! And truly crazy at this point. The nerve-wracking waiting and not knowing is getting to me the most. I am desperately trying to go with the flow but am also terrified. Sure, I'll be a nutty hormonal b for a little time, but that two week wait sounds treacherous. So many women on this board have faced terrible odds, so there is always hope! I cycle in April. I would love to be a cycle buddy and/or a newbie to report my experiences. My husband is 41 and I am 34. The RE made me feel old and is rushing to do all this before 35. But we need ICSI and MESA/TESE (they need to surgically extract sperm at time of ER). Anyhow, it feels like the world is on my shoulders, and I gotta get all the planets aligned. I am just happy there is a place to post my ramblings and worries with women who understand.

BEST OF LUCK. I am sure it will work for you.

Welcome, it is a crazy sometimes scary journey but most will (sometimes with time) have success.
I've had good cycles that fell apart and one far from perfect that resulted in twins. You just have to kind of roll with it and take what comes.
The shots will bother you less with time, most of them are no biggie (the lupron and the follistim), the repronex is a little worse and I will admit that PIO hurts, but well worth it! You may want to ask about EMLA, it's a numbing cream you can put on the skin to make injections less painful.
Good Luck!

Hi Tracey !

I am a newbie too ! I read your post and can totally identify with how you are feeling. I am almost 39, but have been doing fertility treatment for over a year now. My husband who was 49 at the time we started, will be 50 in a few days. We were told we only had an 18% chance of getting pregnant on our own. This was in 2010, and the doc said we would lose about a percent a month as time went by !

Through blood tests done by my GYN, after a miscarriage, it was determined that I was ovulating immature eggs too late in my cycle. We tried some Clomid, but nothing.

I did 4 unsuccessful IUI's in 2010, and then we knew IVF was our only choice. I started my cycle by taking birth control pills this past Jan. I started injections Jan. 30th. To be honest, the shots were no big deal. Even the one intramuscular one called the "trigger" was not that bad. It was the only one my husband had to do for me. Every IVF medication protocol is different based on the person, but mine was really not that bad. I really did not notice any mood swings.

The one thing that did throw me for a bit of a loop was the egg retrieval. I thought I was just going to

38 yrs- #1 conceived naturally 9/06, son born 6/07. #2 conceived naturally 12/08, miscarriage 2/09 at 7 weeks with heartbeat. Began ART 1/10, 3 failed IUI, 5/10 D&C to remove "products of conception" from 4th IUI. 1/30/11 began IVF, 2/18 retrieval :19 e

Hi and welcome! Of course we all understand your fears. But honestly the injections and procedures are NO BIG DEAL after awhile. Don't worry about that part. Everything will be OK.
