Just about to start my first IVF cycle and I'm actually really excited to get started! I always said I'd never go to this extreme (we conceived DD naturally) but here we are and I am ready to get on with it!!! I have several questions:

1. My RE's office scheduled my transfer and retrieval before I got AF.(AF before starting bcps). Is this normal? Wouldn't they have to wait to see when my cd 1 is??

2. I am doing lupron, follistim, and "HMG." What is HMG? Which shots are sub-Q and which are IM?

3. How bad are the PIO shots? Has anyone ever given one to yourself? (DH may have to travel during the 2WW)

4. How long does the transfer take? What about the retrieval? Do you get pain meds afterwards?

TIA!! Kay

Kay,

Hi my name is Kim and I am in the middle of our IVF #1... we just had retrieval on Tuesday and the transfer will be Friday. I do not know the answers to all of your questions... but here goes...

All of our shots have been IM... not too bad... ice your rear end up well before hand and then softly rub it a bit after and you should be fine. We have done 2 nights of the PIO inj and I don't think they are any worse that the others. Just warm it up in your hands (or between your B**bs) before hand and then away you go. Our RE said to ice it before (your bum) and then put a heat source on it after (like a hot water bottle or heating pad) works like a charm and haven't had any troubles yet.

Our retrieval was Tuesday and we had our appt at 8:30 am and we were out of there by 11:30. The actual procedure took a little less than an hour I think... the rest is prep and recovery.

Hope this info is helpful... and good luck!

Kay,

We just finished IVF #1 and actually got a positive blood pregnancy test yesterday. I can tell you how our experience went, but it seems to be pretty different than many others.

1. We did not schedule our transfer ahead. It was only scheduled once they did an ultrasound to check the follicles and saw that they were the right size. I don't see how they could plan it earlier really, but I think I've read of several clinics doing it that way.

2. I'm not sure what HMG is, but maybe it is Humegon. I don't know what that is, but I've read it often. All of my shots (Follistim, Repronex, and Lupron) were sub-q. My trigger shot, the HCG, was IM. I know thr Repronex can be done either way though. I took all my sub-q shots in the tummy, and the HCG in the upper rear area.

3. I didn't do any PIO shots this time, but I remember one from doing IUI's, and that one wasn't too bad. The nurse gave it to me though.

4. Our actual transfer took about 20 minutes (only 2 follicles though). The whole procedure was from 8 a.m.- 11 or so. I had absolutely no pain afterwards, and very little bleeding. The told me to take Tylenol for pain if needed.

Hope that helps some. Good luck with this cycle!

Kay,

I can tell from my experience that the dr and staff involved in my IVF were wonderful and made a uncomfortable/emotional experience as pleasant as possible. We have been married for 14 years (32 & 33) and our plan to start a family 7 years ago did not go as planned --so here we are and more closer than ever with everything we have been through.

Our first IVF was in Jan. I started Lupron while on BCP then once AF started I was seen then started Follistim. My husband admin these shots in my upper thigh, though one night I had to give myself the Lupron -- not too bad because it is small needle. Once follicles were ready the HcG was admin and I had to use betadine (medicated) douche the night before and morning of the retrieval that was scheduled on a Sat. I was so scared. They retrieved 23 eggs and 16 were fertilized (froze 10 and 6 kept going). ET took place on Tues. Due to good quality and my age the dr suggested transferring only 2 (should have done the three that were rated 4 on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the best). The retrieval was nothing -- totally out, I actually had a dream -- they put a heat pad on my abdom after that felt really good. I had pain meds, antibotics, and other meds for four days after. I had a lot of bloating and pain because of so many eggs retrieved -- it got better a couple of days after the transfer. Unfortunately, we did not get pg. My estrogen was so high that may have contributed to not getting pg or could be other unkn factors.

We just finished another cycle using the frozen pre-emby. I was on lupron shots, then took estrogen to prepare my lining and then started baby asprin. They thawed 5 of the 10 frozen and 4 were pretty good quality - not as good as last attempt so we decided to go for it and transferred all 4. Transfers are like paps -- my dr had me taking a valum one hour before ET to calm me though I felt no effect from it. Again I took antibotic and a steriod up to the transfer day (4 days). Absolutely no pain this time, I relaxed and stayed on the couch. I did get a chest congestion that made me cough alot so I thought they would not stay in place (nurse told me coughing, sneezing, and using bathroom will not dislodge them). Well, very surprised it worked. I am now 5wks2d pg. I am still on estrogen and progestrone. My first appt and u/s is in 2 weeks.

I am sorry to keep rambling -- just wanted to tell you that it is not too bad and the staff wil make it as pleasurable as they can considering what we are going through.

It is totally worth it!!!! Good luck and lots of sticky vibes your way!

No news yet, we are anxiously waiting for our 1st appt in 2 wks. I will keep you posted. I do not feel pg now so I will assume that I am having 1 because I believe the sympt would be showing more. I am only have mild cramping and fatique.

I am so happy that my infertility dr will do my 1st u/s so he can see what he has helped us accomplish. We knew going in to this our chances but at least we were able to control the number of ET unlike with IUI we would not know how many fertilized. Under the meds I am a really good responder so this was the best thing for us to do.

Best of luck to you! Keep us posted. Think of good thoughts and I am sure you are in good hands. Jen
