Questions for Doctor - Need Help

My husband and I just went through our first IVF cycle, hoping it would be our only. We received news last week that this cycle failed. My followup doctor appointment is this afternoon and he is not very forthcoming with information and I don't know what to ask. We are paying out of pocket for IVF and I want to make sure that I am educated. We have approx. 10 frozen embryos of varying quality(we went fresh the first time). I don't know the exact quality of the embryos at this point as the doctor just flashed them at me before my transfer. I am still young (early 30's) and the doctor refuses to put more than two embryos in per transfer at this point. I was devastated when I found out it failed as we have had some friends that went through IVF and were sucessful on first cycle, which gave me hope.

I need to know what to ask the doctor so that we can make the most of our next cycle. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Meaghan,

I'm sorry you got a BFN---I know how painful that can be. How I've had IVF explained to me is that part of it is really luck. They don't really know why some great looking cycles work and some don't. I can tell you that we had a beautiful first fresh IVF cycle----transferred one five day blast (I was 29) and got a BFN. We did a FET three months later with the two frozen blasts---they were not quite as high quality---and I got pregnant with twins. They were born healthy and almost full term in April, 2007. So, what I'm saying is that just because the fresh cycle didn't work, I think you have a great chance for the FET.

As for the numbers transferred, it sounds like they are following the standard recommendations for women your age. For a first IVF, I would definitely not feel comfortable with more than two---in fact, we did just one, and when we cycled again in January, we also did just one.

Again, I'm so sorry it didn't work this time. I think that my failed first IVF cycle was almost as painful as my miscarriage was---it was a loss of hope for a baby that had been very, very strong.

Sorry things didn't work out like you wanted.

Things I would ask:

Go over the last protocol - until you understand it - take notes.
