Side effect from multiple IVFs?
Tue, 03-02-2010 - 5:21pm

Hi all,

I am a vetran to the IVF TTC board and have not posted in a while but I have a random question for all of the experienced IVF'ers out there..

I have done 3 IVF cycles and am just gearing up to do a 4th using DE.  I have noticed over the past 6-8 months or so that my hair is getting thinner.  I usually a think mane of dark brown hair but I have been losing tons of hair in the shower, etc. and now it seems to be much thinner.  I still have a lot of hair I guess by regular standards but I am a little worried and thought it might be all of the hormone cocktails.

Has anyone had this side effect?  Thanks for your comments! MLE

Me: TTC since Sept 2007

Hi - from your user name I take it you are in Miami - I am too! I am in South Miami, right next to the Gables. As far as side affects, the biggest side affect I've noticed is weight gain. But some time ago, after IVF #2 my hair did start falling out a bit, but its been about 5 months since then and my hair is normal again. I never made a connection between IVF and the hair, but now that you mention it - it could have been related.

By the way, what RE do you see?

TTC#1 since Jul 2005; 3 IVF's, 5 IUIs and now making 1 beautiful baby!!!

Now that you bring that up, recently I started to notice how my hair is falling. Just like you I do have a lot, so its not a big difference. What I really noticed and I was concerned is about my eyelashes... they are falling very easily.

I just finished my first cycle with some complications.

Oh goodness, talk about hair loss. I am not going to have anything left soon. I will tell you what I learned many years ago, when I had my first child. UGH, I am getting old.

When you are pregnant you do not lose the hair that you usually would. That is why everyone says that they have beautiful thick hair, and it grows really fast. it is your pregnancy hormones. Well after you have the baby your hormones go back to normal ( lets hope ) and all that hair you did not lose and more is now going to fall out. So for all of us ladies going through IVF, are bodies are saying we are pregnant each time we do it,( which would be 3 times in almost 12 months for me) so we tend to lose more and more hair each time.

So don't worry it will grow back, mine is growing back and I look like I have a fuzzy head, and I actually have really long hair.

Good luck with your next cycle, sending lots of sticky vibes your way.

The only lasting side effect I noticed (4 fresh IVF cycles and many IUI/injects cycles) is weight gain. As the pp mentions, you should get thickness back when you get pg as hair loss slows down to below normal then.

Wishing you luck with your DE cycle!

Hair loss? Yes, definitely, but it does come back. I'm 43 and have been doing IVF for 4 years. It always grows back. And actually, after all these extra doses of progesterone and estrogen, my skin and hair looks a lot healthier than many friends my age so I do think there is a benefit.
