When can I start 1st IVF cycle

Hi,

I'm new to the message board. I'm 35, DH is 33, we've been TTC since Nov '99. Just learned on July 2nd that my tube is blocked. (Other tube was removed when I was a girl along with my other ovary and my appendix, when I had a dermoid cyst). I have adhesions and the doc doesn't know what the tube is attached to, so DH and I have decided to pursue IVF. We have an appointment with the RE on Aug 13. This will be day 22 of my cycle. Does anyone know how soon I will be able to begin treatment? Will it be my next cycle or will I have to wait? (I don't want to wait...)

Also, does anyone know of any supplemental insurance to cover IVF in PA? My company offers 4 medical plans, but none cover any infertility treatment except for diagnosis. They will cover surgery to remove the adhesions, but my doc is unsure how successful this would be and may require IVF afterwards anyway.

Thanks!

Hi Alli,

I am not sure how soon you can start IVF process, most likely they will want to do some additional tests (however looks like you have most of them done by now). I understand you being so anxious to start as soon as possible, hopefuly you can start the very next cycle. The funny thing about IVF is that they put you on BCP (birth control) for 3 weeks first.

Good luck and let us know what happens!

Thanks Kasia,

How is it going for you? I've read about people getting sooo emotional on the hormones. I took Clomid about 3 years ago and got really weepy when AF arrived. (Turns out that Dr. didn't know what he was doing though...) Baby dust to you :)

Alli,

Call your RE and ask what their procedure is. My RE doesn't make you take the birth control pills for 3 weeks unless your periods are irregular, in that case you will have to wait until the following cycle. But my RE has patients start Lupron on cd21 if your cycles are regular. So check and see, if you can get in prior to cd21 you may not have to wait an extra cycle!! I know how hard it is to skip a cycle! Good luck!

Hi Alli,

If you are on CD21, you should be starting your period with in a wk (if yours are regular), so QUICKLY schedule appt with RE, because they ALWAYS do a CD3 baseline workup (blood wood & antral follicle ultrasound). The bloodwork is most important becuase it reveals what your hormone levels are and allow the RE to assess your IVF success probabilities or limitations. SOME REs do start you on bcps, some don't...in order to squeeze me into my RE's August cycle (because we're relocating to Italy in Sept), I was put on bcps and only took them for 10 days, then you stop and another "bleed" (menstrual period) occurs and you go in for another b/w & u/s (like a new CD3) and they test your levels again... IF all is acceptable, they start you on stimulants and have you come back in more frequently to assess how you're responding to the stims (via more b/w & u/s).

I hear IVF is VERY cheap in Canada... if you're interested, visit this IVF board, I'm sure plenty of women there can help you with info on costs in Canada:

Here's a board for your state: http://207.44.160.141/board/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=127

Thanks Sandra, but the first I can get in to see my RE is is CD22. I guess I'll have to wait.

Hi Ling,

Thanks, I wish you the best. The earliest I can see the RE is CD22, so I guess I'm going to have to wait 1 month. Also, I live in the US (Pennsylvania) so Canada is not close enough to help, but thank you for the info, I'll check it out.
