We usually have sort of a theme based on the cake. I let the kids pick their cake and then I make it; I have done some easy ones like a train or a skateboard but also some pretty challenging ones like Mack the semi off of the movie Cars. My favorite was super simple but really fun and yummy - a "dirt cake" complete with gummy worms made in a giant sand pail, and all the kids ate out of mini sand pails, they loved it :) and they got to take the pails home with a shovel as giveaways.
Mack does sound like a more challenging cake. Love the dirt cake and having the kids eat out of small sand pails. DH is usually the one who is creative with the cakes at our house. I usually am the one taking them to the bakery to pick one out! lol.
I am going to do the brown Teddy bear (face only) cake for my 2yo next month I think. My 6 Yo has requested a hockey rink cake which should be easy enough - just an oval cake with lines drawn on, and some toppers from Bulk Barn.
I love the dirt cake idea, Lisa, too cute!
