Recital Fee??

Maddie's been taking gymnastics this year and we were really looking forward to the recital in June. The place we take her too is really big on "having fun" and not taking this too seriously like other dance studios, that's why I chose this place. It's also affordable, we pay $30 a month for once a week lessons, plus because we chose the monthly payment plan her recital costume is free (it would have cost $65 otherwise).

So they took a long time getting us the date of the recital or any info on it. Then this week when we went for the lesson there is this big notice on the wall about how they are going to be charging a $65 recital fee for them to be able to take part in the recital! Normally they just sell tickets for $10 each, but they said that in the past there haven't been enough tickets sold to pay for the venue, so they are charging this fee now. They did not tell us about this fee when we signed up, it's just something they dreamed up at the last minute. Then one of the other moms told me that last year they had to rehearse three days in a row, until 11 pm at night!!!! You have to take part in the rehearsal or you can't participate in the recital. We had planned on making this a big night, and have a nice dinner out after the recital. Well, apparently the recital starts around 7 pm and goes on until after 11:30 at night! I am really shocked at all this stuff, I'm new to the "dance" world, I don't know if this is the norm or what, but we cannot afford to pay $65 and I'm not putting my daughter through all these really late nights when she's only 6 years old!

Now I'm just wondering if they will give us the recital costume. We were supposed to get it well in advance of the recital but I haven't seen one yet, and I bet they will say you have to come to rehearsal to get the costume. I find it really interesting that the cost of the recital is the exact same cost of the costumes.

I just don't like all this last minute stuff they are trying to pull. Maddie will be really disappointed not going to the recital but I just think this is ridiculous!

Has anyone else dealt with anything like this before? Is this the way it normally is??

Beth

Hi Beth,

I have been where you are at! I agree with you it is mighty funny that the fee is the same cost as the costume. I get infuriated at the price for a costume that is so poorly made and the pressure they put on the kids. Brie has been asking for a few years to do dance, but I can't find any studio that doesn't have these kind of practices. This year we are joining a Christian soccer league.

I think they hope your child will really want to be in the recital and parents will just pay it to make their child happy! I am so sorry this has happened to you!

Beth - Here, I'll make you feel better.
Julia's dance recital fee - which includes the costume and four tickets - is $130. !!! Yikes. Then $10 extra per extra ticket. And yes, they want you to participate in the rehearsal to participate in the recital too - though they spread the rehersal out so you only have to come one time for Julia's.
The 7-11 thing makes no sense - ours starts at 3 so at least it should be over by 6 or so I think...

Still, my sympathies - but I do think this is the way it is in a lot of places. Really stinks.
