My son has a large lump on his neck

We went to the clinic and the doctor sent us straight to a specialist. The specialist thinks it could be a cyst. I don't know anything about cysts and lumps other than that they are related to cancer and I'm SCARED (really really really scared) of cancer.

They put him on antibiotics for two weeks and said that if it gets bigger or doesn't change in size in the two weeks to come back in and they would talk about removing it surgically.

Normally I think I'd be taking this OK. I'm just not all that stable in my faith in the world being nice to me right now. Heck, it takes one kid, why not both, ya know? If I could have some healthy wishes right now for my son I would be very happy.

Thank you,

Robyn

(And Gavin 7-11-99)

Robyn, your little one is in my thoughts and prayers. My nephew had a cyst in his neck when he was just a baby. It did go away though, thankfully. I'm hoping your son's goes away too w/o the need of surgery. My prayers are with you. Please keep us posted.

Robyn, I will be thinking of you and Gavin. I certainly hope he doesn't need the surgery-I believe cysts often go away on their own. Healthy vibes coming your way.

Robyn, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope the antibiotics work and the lump/cyst shrinks on its own.

Hugs and prayers.

Oh Robyn, Life just stinks sometimes!! Cysts are very common in your neck. It is very rare that they turn out to be cancer, especially given your son's age. Very rare. I know with everything you have been through very rare does not mean much, but just know that the chances are very high that this will go away on its own. If it does not, in most cases they can remove them through aspiration, with a needle. I know it sounds gross, but a lot of the people in my family have been through it.

If the doctor is talking about cysts, it is not cancer. Cancer is tumors and not cysts. Even most tumors turn out to be non-cancerous and are easy to remove. When I was young, I had a cyst on my shoulder. It was there for 10 years. It never did anything other than be annoying once in a while. Eventually, the Dr. removed it because I asked him to.

I hope this helps. I will be thinking about you and your son and sending lots of good thoughts your way. If you want to send me an email I would be happy to talk to you more about it. laura.stillmunkes@verizonwireless.com

Keep us posted on how it goes!

Laura, I'm so glad you had this knowledge to post. I was going to post that I believed most cysts were not cancerous, but it's so good that someone who KNOWS was able to post.

Robyn, I'm so sorry to hear about your son. {{{{HUGS}}}} and many prayers to you and your family. Keep us posted on how things are going. Know we are thinking of you and praying for only the best.

Hi, Robyn. I hope your son is okay and doesn't have to have the cyst removed. I'm pretty sure that cyst is a good diagnosis and that they are never cancerous. I had a cyst in my breast one time. It actually went away on it's own after several months. Good luck to you. I'll be thinking about you.

Thank you Sheree. That means a lot to me. We have a couple of weeks now before we will know any more. I'm looking forward to closure on this.
