Worried about my dad
Fri, 01-13-2012 - 11:38pm
He had a massive heart attack at age 36 and a small one around 47. They diagnosed him with coronary artery disease. It attacks his heart muscle. 2 years ago doctors told him he needed a heart defibrillator because he was a prime candidate for his heart to just stop. Tonight he called my brother and I over and told us his defibrillator shocked him this morning. His heart rate got up to 238 and he saw a bright flash of light then it felt like he was hit in the chest by a truck. The doctor told him if he did not have the dibibrillator he would have died. Nothing anyone could have done would have brought him back. I told him he had to live because he had at least one more grandchild to meet. My mom is already gone and I can't imagine my kids not knowing their papaw! I pray that what the doctors are doing will help. I'm so scared of losing my dad. I wouldn't know what to do without him here! Thanks for listening ladies! I just needed to get my feelings out before a exploded.

I'm so sorry that your dad is going through all this. It's really scary when someone you know is having problems with their heart. I think it is way more scary than some of the other illnesses that people go through. The good news is that the ICD did what it was supposed to and shocked him out of the rhythm he was in. When something like that happens the only thing that saves them is getting shocked with paddles or their the internal defibrillator! It is pretty scary when it shocks people though. I had a patient that got shocked 7 times and we've heard that it's like getting kicked in the chest by a horse. Every time she got shocked she let out this piercing scream, it was one of the more horrible things I've seen. I'm just glad that your Dad's doctors put in the defibrillator and that he had it when he needed it! Just make sure he takes care of himself and keeps up with his meds and doctor's appointments. That's the best thing he can do for his health. My prayers go out to you and your family, I hope that he doesn't have any further problems.
