2 questions about spotting and LP

Hi there
My husband and I are ttc #2 and just sadly finished cycle 6. I have two questions about spotting which I seem to do about every other month a day or so before my period.
1) I know that you don't count day 1 of the new cycle until you get "red blood" but last night around 11, I went to the bathroom after spotting off and on yesterday and had almost red/pinkish blood (sorry tmi!). But nothing on my pad all night until this morning when it really started. When would you count day 1?
2) I have a short luteal phase which is usually 10 or 11 days. But then since I sometimes start spotting very light pink watery stuff even 9 DPO, does that take me out for the month at that point? I know that your period can sweep away a fertilized egg trying to implant if your LP is too short but does spotting do the same thing? So if you start to spot, and it is not implantation spotting, does it mean your period will definitely "win out" over a fertilized egg trying to implant?
Hope that makes sense. I spoke to my dr to see if she thought the 10-11 day LP was the problem here and she thought not but that was before I spotted 9 DPO this time so I really started to wonder.
Anyway, thanks in advance for any help!!
