Advice for when I see the doc?
| Mon, 09-01-2003 - 10:39pm |
I have been ttc for 7 months now. I have a pap scheduled with my OB/GYN next month. I think it is time for me to talk to her about it.
Do you have any recommendations on things I should request? Also, what can I expect her to do?

If you have been charting or keeping a "period journal" or anything like that take it with you. The Doc will probably go over your TTC history and order a basic blood screen to rule out anything obvious like thyroid keeping you from Ovulating, maybe then move on to an US, or have you start Temperature charting to determine if you are actually Ovulating or not. THEN probably move in to the expensive tests (which was the first thing Stephanie's Dr. ordered). Just make sure to ASK your Dr. about the tests, when she called the lab to find out what they were she found out they would cost about $5,000.00 just for the blood tests.
Write a list before you go so that "in the moment" you don't forget anything.
The biggest thing is to make sure you are comfortable with the doctor and they are paying attention to your questions and fears and not just brushing you off. If you get that feeling at all, FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR.
TTC is too important and too hard to be blown off by a Doctor.
You should discuss your concern with your ob/gyn. Normally if you are under 35, they will start an IF workup after 1 year of TTC, if you are 35 or over at 6 months. Bring your charts/BBT/O with you since this is a good place for your ob/gyn to start. With these, she can see if you ar Oing and check your LP. Once you start an IF workup (hopefully you won't need one) blood work for you and SA are usually the 1st things that happen. The blood work would check your estrogen/progestrone/LH/FSH/etc hormones and of course the SA for you DH would check count/motility/quality/etc of the little swimmers. For me, once we had all these test, and they were normal, we moved on to more test(PCT and HSG) and started on Clomid (even though I was ovulating this improves egg quality). Once my OB/GYN had done all she felt she could, I was refered to a RE.
If you are concerned, discuss this with your OB/GYN and see what she thinks and where she thinks you should go from here. Often insurance won't pay for a IF workup til you've been trying for a year. But I don't know, maybe they could code it somehow on your insurance so they will???
Baby Dust to you and good luck

Fortunately I have a great doctor who has always listened to me and spent as much time as I needed - finding her was a miracle!
I will make a list of my concerns before, that is a great idea.
Thanks!

Thanks for your informative post. I have no idea what to expect, and this is very helpful. That is good info about the insurance, I never thought that might be an issue. I will definately look into it before I see her.
I get anxiety about going to the doctor, and knowing what to expect helps me with that.
Thanks again!
