I'm scheduled for one today and would welcome any BTDT advice. I'm Lori, I'm 32, and we've been TTC our second child for a year and a half. Thank you!

Lori,

I had one two cycles ago and it was no big deal. If there is something blocking your tubes it will be more painful, but if everything's clear, as mine were, it's just kind of uncomfortable, not bad, though. For mine, they had me get into the "Pap smear position" and they put in a speculum like in a Pap and then inserted a cathetar into my uterus. The cathetar has a balloon on the end of it that they inflate to hold it in place. That was the part where I got crampy, like mild AF cramps. The whole process took maybe 2-3 minutes and the cramps lasted for about 30 sec. Then I got to lay down more comfortably and they squirted dye through the cathetar into my uterus. I didn't even feel this, but, as I said, if your tubes are blocked, I've heard that this part can be painful. That lasted for around 5 minutes. It was actually pretty cool. I got to see my uterus and tubes on the screen and the radiologist explained everything to me as she went along. Then they deflate the balloon, pull it out, and that's it. It took me probably 10 minutes total and I felt completely fine afterwards. My recommendations are to take some Tylenol or Advil before you go and to bring along a panty liner because the dye will drain out for awhile afterwards and you may spot (I did). GL to you!! Most of the women here who've had one have had no problems with it, and I'm sure you won't either.

I just had mine yesterday. It was not half as bad as I thought it would be. My Dr numbed my cervix (which I didnt even feel) before the test so I did not feel much at all. They advised to take 4 advil (yes 4) 1 hour prior to help with any cramping.

The thought of what they do it worse then the test itself. My tubes were all open so they test was over before it started - it went very quick - it was less then 2 minutes from the time they put the dye in until it was over. The dr advise bleeding may appear heavy due to the liquid dye but I did not have much at all.

Best of luck to you - if you can try & relax - tighting up makes for much worse cramps!!
