Anyone taking Prometrium?
| Wed, 11-18-2009 - 9:46pm |
My dr. just prescribed Prometrium to help correct my Luteal Phase Defect. Just curious, have/are any of you taking Prometrium? If so, what dosage? Any side effects? Would also love to hear any success stories... Thanks so much for your help. :)

Hi!
I have never taken Prometrium but I am really curious about it and about your LPD. I just got AF today and I was really upset. We've been TTC#2 for about 4 months now and after I weaned DD#1, my cycles have been crazy. I have always O'd late with a shorter than average LP (10 days) but since I got AF back in June, it's only been at the most, 7 days.

Lila,
I take prometrium for my LP too.
This is my second cycle on Prometrium 200mg once a day. I take mine at night as I lay down for bed.The first night I took it I felt HORRIBLE. Light headed, double vision, nausea. Went to sleep and I was fine in the morning. No side effects since then. I take it from cd17 until AF shows. Last cycle I had a 12 luteal phase and this time I am on 16DPO and BFN. So not sure if it is from the Prometrium or not.

ugh, i'm sorry you're going through this with your cycles! i really understand how you feel. i have a similar situation going on.. i nursed my DD for the first year, during which time my previous o.b. prescribed the all-progesterone BCP. so i took that for a full year (no placebo), and never got my period during that time. when i stopped nursing, i stopped the BCP (about 14 months ago), and ever since, my cycle has been totally nuts. typically very long-- usually 34-42 days long, with a short LP, like you. i would also spot for 6 to 7 days leading up to my period. so naturally, i have been concerned about my progesterone levels while TTC #2. last cycle, my o.b. refused to have my progesterone checked (even though i called several times during that cycle b/c i was just sure i didn't have high enough levels to sustain a pregnancy)-- she said i was jumping the gun and that we should just "wait and see what happens".. well, sure enough i got a BFP, and only a few days later, i miscarried. at 13DPO i did have my progesterone levels checked, and they were very low, as i had expected-- only at 9. of course, i knew that wasn't good news, and i did end up losing the baby. i know there could have been a million other reasons why i miscarried, but it is very hard to think that it may have been something that i could have prevented, had i absolutely insisted on having my progesterone checked. ugh, well, what's done is done, and i can only move forward now. i feel better that this cycle i'm being proactive and taking the prometrium, so if i DO m/c again, at least i'll know that i did everything i could to prevent it, kwim?
maybe what you can do is bring your charts in to your doc, and all of the information you have. i think it's reasonable to think that maybe you are low in progesterone as well, so it wouldn't hurt to have your blood drawn, maybe right after you ovulate this cycle? if your progesterone is on the low end, your doc can prescribe a progesterone supplement that you can begin taking right away. my understanding is that you can see the effects rather quickly, which is a good thing. :)
good luck to you and please keep us posted! i will be really interested to hear what your doctor says, and what your experience is with the progesterone, if you go that route..
thanks,
lila
how are you feeling?? 7 weeks-- yay!! :) i hope you are doing well.
thanks for the input.. it's so helpful to hear what other people are doing. my doc actually prescribed only 100mg once/day (vaginal suppository-- yum, yum!). this may be wrong, but i'm going with 100mg twice/day. i have been doing so much research, and maybe i'm just extra scared because of the miscarriage, but i just want to be 100% sure that i'm doing everything i can, know what i mean? i keep going back and forth in my mind... one side says i'm crazy for not following dr's orders to a tee, and the other side says, if i had listened to my intuition last time, i may still be pregnant now, so... ugh. what do you think? am i making a mistake by doing 200mg/day?
thanks. :)

my doc told me to test at 14DPO and if it's negative, to stop taking the prometrium. she says it could delay my period, but i know that some people (like you, hopefully!) don't get their bfp until well beyond having missed their period, so...? oy. it's all so stressful.
well good luck and keep us posted! thanks again for your response. :)

so glad to hear you're doing well! might be a good thing if these first few weeks fly by, right? ;)
