? for anyone who has taken Provera

Since I know I'm not pg I can't obsess about that right now and since I know that AF is all screwed up I'm stuck in a waiting pattern so now I'm obsessing about this Provera and cycle #2. lol ;) For anyone who has been on Provera before, what was the cycle after Provera like? Any better? Any worse? I'm so afraid that after AF does show up I could be stuck in the same boat next cycle sitting around on cd43 with another round of BFNs and no AF in sight.

Does having to use the Provera this cycle mean that I did not O? or just that I didn't wait around long enough to see when AF might have come (if ever)? I thought I knew when I O'd last month but now it's pretty obvious that I was wrong. If I had O'd when I thought I did AF should have come 14 days later shouldn't it? It worries me that maybe I didn't O at all.

I know I'm worrying too much but a girls' gotta have something to obsess about, right? lol

I took depo for about 6 months about 5 years ago. I think my first "period" on depo was nothing but some spotting and then I didn't get a period after that. Once I went off the depo, I still didn't get a period for about 6 more months. I had really heavy, painful, long periods before going on depo. Since I went off, they are much lighter and don't last quite as long although I think my body started catching up more recently. I hope that helps.

Is Depo the same thing as Provera? I was thinking that Depo is a form of birth control but that Provera was just a form of progesterone and not birth control?

Oh maybe... I was on DepoProvera. I hadn't heard of just provera. I always called it depo for short though.

Provera is a brand-name form of progesterone. It is different from Depo-Provera, the birth control (but I believe manufactured by the same company).

I haven't been on Provera, but I have been on a generic progesterone as well as Prometrium brand of progesterone in order to induce AF. My AF was induced by progesterone in May after a 184 day cycle. I took pills for 10 days, three days later I got a period, albeit a light one. My doctor was hoping this would "kick-start" my system, and I waited for my next AF. The next AF didn't arrive for 42 days. After that AF, I had my first IF consult, had another progesterone-induced AF, and started on Clomid to induce ovulation.

If you had O'ed last month, then you would have gotten AF (or a BFP) at about the time expected. I'm sorry, but you probably didn't O. One suggestion: consider charting your temps. I know that you're early in the game, but charting your temps will enable you to definitively tell your doctor that you are not ovulating (otherwise, most don't want to talk to you about infertility until you've been TTC for a year). Check out the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler; it's a great resource.

Good luck to you!

Thanks for the information Tami it was very helpful. I had a feeling that I probably did not O, even though for a while I was positive that I had. I hope that this kick start with the Provera will get things back to normal so I will O next cycle. I have heard that it can take up to four months for your body to regulate itself after bcp and that I may not O right away. So I guess maybe it's somewhat normal not to O the fist cycle? I was on bcp for 12 years and I'm sure my body is going nuts right now figuring out what to do. I sure do hope that O happens next cycle.

I was wondering, were you on bcp at all before you started having problems with AF? I was always regular before I went on bcp so I'm hoping that will work in my favor.

I've been on the fence about temping and charting but I guess I better start in case I end up having O problems. From what I've seen from my doctor so far he's seems to be pretty proactive so maybe if I still have O problems in the next few months he'll go ahead and start treating me instead of making me wait a year.

Thanks again for the advice!

I was on BCP for about 2 years before I went off them last year. I generally will be regular for the first 4-6 cycles right off the pill, and then I revert back to my chronic irregularity. I was always irregular, which was the reason I even went on BCP back in the day. A lot of women are irregular after going off BCP, and a lot are regular. It's just one of those weird things that is different for each of us.

Good luck with your Provera cycle! (And beware pg symptoms... the Provera will probably give you sore bbs & nipples, etc.)

I hope I can be of some help. I just recently ended a 10 day prescription of Provera. After not having a period for 6 months my OB/GYN prescribed this for me. She advised to take the Provera everyday for the 10 days and up to 2 weeks after ending the medication I would begin my period. I was only on day 8 when I started my period. When I was on BCP my period was usually 4 days and light. After the Provera my period was 8 days and continuous (no spotting). It's the first in 6 months so I expected the worse and hopefully my cycle will be back on track. I go in for bloodwork next week to see if I've begun ovulating again. Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks so much for your input! I'm a little nervous about how AF will treat me when she finally comes. When I was on bcp mine was also only 4 days and it was medium to light (every now and then it would be a little heavy). I'm guess that this one will be heavy and last a long time since I'm past my normal cycle. I hope the Provera was just what you needed to get your cycle back on track and that your blood work shows that you've started ovulating. Please let me know how it goes and Good Luck!

Your post could have been written by me! I can't believe how similar we are.

I am 30 & was on Loestrin BCP for 11 yrs. I went off in April, got AF, then nothing until Aug 19 after being on Prometrium for 10 days.I felt like I O'd right before I went to the DR but if I had I think I would have gotten AF earlier than I did.

I am so glad that I bit the bullet and called my Dr. We weren't going to TTC yet, just wanted to get "ready." I never expected this at all and do not know anyone personally that this has happened to...all my friends were regular right away.

I had all the preliminary hormone tests to see if I am menopausal and all were "normal". I don't think that's really reliable until they do it at a certain time of your cycle. My TSH (thyroid)was 4 which Drs consider normal.I think that if I don't get AF again this cycle I am going to persue the thyroid thing a little more. 4 seems a little higher than I should be so maybe that's the problem.

I am on CD22 and I feel like I O'd sometime in the past few days. It's hard to tell, I feel some different cramps but I haven't O'd in 11 years so I am not sure what it feels like and when they should occur. Before BCP I was regular and as much as I can remember, my cycles were on the long side, 30-35 days I think.

I wish I could tell you what cured me but I'm probably still messed up this cycle.I have done A LOT of research for us though! I am taking 800 mcg (or mg?) of Vitex daily (2 pills) to see if that helps. I have comfort in my Drs appt on Oct 10 so I know that whatever does or doesn't happen this month I can do SOMETHING about it soon.

Unfortunately, we may just have to wait it out. They say that eventually your cycles return to normal eventually. Then the pessimist in me says "If you are normal!" and maybe I have had problems that were masked by BCP.

Trish, we are definitely both in the same boat! I hope that your cycle is back in gear this month. Before bcp mine were a clockwork 30 days and that's what I expected to go back to right away but my body had other ideas. I hope it was just my hormones trying to get back to work that made this cycle so screwy and that after this Provera my body will understand what it needs to do. You mentioned Vitex, what is that? Is it something that your doctor prescribed or suggested to you? Thanks for sharing your experience and advice, even though I hate that you have to go through this it's nice to know that there is someone else out there who can relate. I hope that "eventually" happens for us much sooner than later. Please let me know how this cycle goes for you and I'd love any other info that you come across.
