CF test, has anyone had one?

Hi Ladies,

I had my annual "well woman" checkup last week and while I was there, my doctor said that he was recommending a CF (cystic fibrosis) test for his TTC patients. Apparently, it can be done during the same blood draw for an also recommended cholesterol test (ack! I am turning 30 in two months!)... He said that the test can determine whether or not I was a CF carrier and that if I am, then they can test DH to see if he is and we would know whether or not our potential little one was at risk for CF prior to conception...

Has anyone heard of this test?

Just curious...

My doctor told me about that test too when I told her that we were planning to start trying. When DH has his complete physical earlier this summer, he had them to the blood work on him to see if he was a carrier. If he was, then I would have had it done on myself, but fortunately, he wasn't.

Hi Shelley! My sister had ds back in December and found out after he was born that he has CF. My sister did not know she was a carrier of the CF gene, nor her husband. Her dr informed her to tell her siblings that we too should be tested as we may also be carriers. The chances of having a CF child is 25% if both you and dh carry the gene. This is my sister's 4th child (3 with previous husband) and first with present dh. My sister also informed me that her dr told her to make sure that our children are also tested as CF genes may skip generation too- does that make sense? My sister will have a very long road ahead of her with son having cf- he is now, what 8/9 months old, and has been hospitalized four times for two/three weeks at a time. No matter what you read, cf is still a very deadly disease, and while chances of survival are increasing, still most cf children die before they're 20. Hope this doesn't bring you down...and I pray that you and dh do not have cf genes, but definitely yes- do the b/t..simple enough and a good thing to know so that you can consider whether or not you want to take the chances of having a baby with cf if you and dh do carry the gene. Huge (((((((((hugs))))))))))) LOLove, Connie

Hi Connie,

Thanks so much for the information and your dear sister and her DS and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Poor little baby to have to be hospitalized so much and your poor sister for going through all of that with her precious little one--hugs and love to them both.

Your post is very valuable to me and I will definitely get tested.

LOTS of hugs and love to you,

Shelley
