Checking for CM for the first time, HELP

Hello.
I've been TTC since september 2008, I had a miscarriage in February and only after that we began to really try to get pregnant. So this is my fourth cycle when I really try to BD around the time I ovulate.
For the last two months I've used OPK and I've found out I ovulate around CD 16-18, and I've had 28 days cycles.
This time I'm planning on checking my CM. Yesterday I noticed white thick CM in my underwear, which I don't know if I should describe as creamy or sticky? And today I tried to put my finger up there, but I don't know how far I should go so I just hardly put it in, and only thing I got was really just like a water?
I'm trying to use fertility friend (I'm not taking my temperature this cycle though)
So my questions are: what does the CM look like when it's creamy, sticky, watery and egg white? And how far in with my finger should I go when I check for CM?
I'm on CD 10 today, so isn't that really early for 'watery' CM? Because fertility friend puts green around 'W' and I think that means I'm getting fertile right?

I will take a stab at this and anyone can correct me if wrong.
