Could this be the culprit?

So, I have had etremely erratic temps this cycle and I heard that can be from a faulty thermometer. I have had this one for a quite a while, so yesterday I bought a new one. Has anyone had a thermometer seem to work but actually been faulty?

Well, out of curiousity, I temed with both today to compare them (I used them at the exact same time. I know, what a picture). I do know sometimes they can have different readings and you don't necessarily want to switch mid-cycle. Well, my old one read 97.2 and my new one read 97.9. Doesn't that seem like an extreme difference in readings? One is total pre-O temps and the new one is post-O temps. Maybe this is just wishful thinking, but could me see-saw temp readings this month be due to a faulty thermometer? Is there a chance I could have ovulated already with that 97.9 temp? Last month my temps changed like a couple tenths of a degree from day to day. Now they have been shifting a half degree or more from day to day.

Of course I would have loved to have Oed already and go w/ the new temps reading, but I want to be accurate as well. Should I continue to use the new thermo with the old one and see if it is as erratic? Wow, I sure feel crazy being this obsessive, but that's why I come to you girls- to help sort out the insanity. Let me know what you think, please.

I suppose anything is possible, but who knows? You could fill a cup with body temp water & do a bunch of tests. It'd use both for the rest of your cycle & see if the difference between the two stays constant or changes. If it changes by much then I'd say the old one is bad. Good luck!

I agree with PP use both for the rest of your cycle and if you do continue to get the large gaps in temps I would go with the new one next cycle and say that you have an old faulty themometer.

Is that usually what your post-O temps are like?

i have 2 therms ( i did the double temping thing too, LOL looked like a robot-walrus) they aree both consistent, but one rergisters .5 degrees higher than the other. i dont know which to use, altho it makes no difference, as long as i use the same them ALL month long.

try taking your temp with the older therm over and over again, to see if the temps vary by much. that is a good test.

and just pick one therm and use it every day.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am going to stick with the old temps readings, but out of curiosity I am going to try the new temp too and see if the ups and downs at least stay consistent w/ the old therm's temps. I have a feeling I am just having some weird crazy cycle. Today, cd 35 I had spotting, that turned to light flow and now nothing. Now do I call this a new cycle or not? I might start a whole new post on this because I'm not really sure what to consider this. If it's not one thing, my body throws something else into the mix! Thanks again.

CD is the first day of real flow. but if it stops??? i guess just wait and see, if it starts up again, keep the cycle going.

as confusing as it is, just keep temping, and you'll probably be able to see if you are pre-o or post-o from temps, and that is what you REALLY need to know, not when CD1 is.

GL!!
