Dr wants progesterone checked

this coming weekend, But he didn't say why. I am TTc and on CD 17 and I still haven't ovulated (according to my ovulation predictor kit). He hung up the phone so quickly that I didn't have a chnace to ask him why and I hate to call his office back with a silly question like that. I was hoping that maybe you could tell me what progesterone testing does. Should I still get it done if I don't ovulate at all? Thanks in advance!

Progesterone testing is a pretty routine test when TTC...it is to make sure that your body produces enough progesterone to sustain a pregnancy. Progesterone is what prepares the uterus for implantation and sustains the pregnancy.
As for whether you should have the test before Ovulation...probably not. It will show low levels of progesterone and may cause the doc to think you have a problem that you actually do not. Progesterone tests are commonly done 7 dpo.
Of course, I'm not a doctor...and there could be a reason why he would want the test before O...but I've found docs tend to just "assume" all women O on CD14.
I would call and talk to the nurse about it and tell her that you have not ovulated. That would be better than having an unnecessary test that would probably have to be repeated after you O...or end up being unnecessarily treated for low progesterone because the doc assumes the test was done after O when it wasn't.
Hope this helps! I wish you much good luck as you TTC!
