Fibroids and pregnancy (m)

Hi all! It's been a long while since I've posted here, LOL! Anyway, this is more for my SIL than for me. Her and my brother have been TTC for a long time. She found out that she has a fibroid in her uterus. So far no one has told her what this means as far as her ever having children. Anyone here have one removed and go on to have a baby? Or know anything about it? The first OB/GYN she talked to said his immediate reaction was that she needed to have a hystorectomy (sp?). That just didn't sound right!
Thanks!
Crystal

Some key quotes from this article - and why I would recommend your SIL get a 2nd and 3rd opinion:
* A hysterectomy is currently the treatment recommended for most women with fibroids. In fact, fibroid tumors are the most common reason for hysterectomies in the United States, accounting for 30 percent of all hysterectomies performed in the country, about 200,000 hysterectomies per year. Although there are some fibroid cases that do warrant a hysterectomy, with current technology many women with fibroids can avoid radical surgery. Studies estimate that 30 to 50 percent of all hysterectomies performed in general may have been clearly unnecessary, while another 10 to 20 percent may be avoided by using alternative approaches.
*The average "large" fibroid usually will not interfere with either conception or pregnancy.
* An extremely large fibroid may interfere with a pregnancy simply because it takes up too much space.
* Currently, about 40 percent of all reproductive-age women have one or more fibroid tumors, but only half of these women experience any symptoms
Good luck to your SIL & brother, and welcome back to the board!
