Fifth Disease and Pregnancy?

A friend was diagosed with fifth disease and is pregnant. She now has to see a prenatal

specialist her entire pregnancy. I feel so badly for her. Has anyone known anyone with this? She might miscarry or the baby might have birth defects. I feel so bad for her. What a joy to find out you are pg then to find out this must be so horrible. She is so worried and there really is not much for the prenatal specialist to do to help. Just monitor the fetus... She ended up getting it from her 1st child.

Please if anyone knows anyone that has had it please post here. I want to hear happy news! I just adore her to death and want her to have a happy pregnancy!

Thanks!

I have heard of this once and it is not good news. The woman I knew about ended up giving birth very, very early. Her son is over one year old now, is extremely tiny, and is blind. However, her doc was very non-chalant about the fifths disease, and seems to have taken it muck less seriously than your friend's doc. Please take some time to investigate this on the net for your friend, she may be overwhelmed.

Sorry I don't know more.

Thank you for responding. I have done some research and some sites say that there is a chance for birth defects and some say there is no birth defects. So confusing. She is only 6 weeks pg and the chance for m/c is greater for her having the disease so early in the pg. I wish I could help her in some way. I was talking to my mom about it and she is amazed how different it is now to have a baby. Way back when..... when a women got pg she did not know for months,, they would assume they had gas, gained some weight etc... and then after they discovered they were pg they saw their doc. and confirmed it and basically you were on your own until birth. Diseases were not something you worried about and if you m/c it was gods way of saying that you were not ready for a baby.

I just found it amazing how different it was for my mother and now we worry about a flu, cold, sniffles, exercise, eating, sleep, and everything else in life. She never worried and just lived life to its fullest and had 8 kids, with 2 babys that died of crib death and 4 m/c. I dont know how she did it! Now I am stuggling to just have one. Sometimes I wish I lived way back when........

Thank you again!
