Food safety while TTC

So, even while TTC, I have been carefully monitoring everything that goes into my mouth, just treating my body as if it were pregnant. I had one question after searching and searching the net I can't come up with a definite answer, and wonder if any of you could chime in.

I love authentic parmesan reggiano cheese from the "Fresh Market" (that has been aged for 24 months), they have those HUGE wheels of cheese sitting out and they cut off individual size chunks for people to buy by the pound. My question is, I know soft cheeses with unpasteurized milk is a 'no-no', and I know that regular parmesan cheese is on the 'safe list', but what about authentic parmesan reggiano cheese that they have sitting in the store at room temperature, is that safe to eat? I am dying for some! It says to store it in the fridge, so why is masses of this cheese sitting at room temperature in the store?

I would appreciate any input!! Thank you!

I am not sure...when I was pg I would call my doc if I wasn't sure and I questioned the safety a food. I mean, I was the type who wouldn't eat Doritos because they have MSG. I was very conscious of what I ate.
With that said, I do watch what I eat while TTC too, but if AF comes and I know I'm not pg, I'll do what I want. I am a little more careful during the 2WW. However, in the almost year I've been TTC this go round, I have backed way off of how strict I used to be. I was driving myself nuts!
I say call your doc if you are worried. :)

I read on the back of the label that pasteurized milk was used. I also found various places on the internet saying that since it was a hard, aged cheese, that the moisture content was too low for listeria to thrive and it didn't need to be refrigerated. I'm eating my parmesan reggiano, I can't do without it! lol

My nurses advice on that would be No. Safe cheeses are pasteurized and stored in the refridgerator. Anything sitting out breeds the bacteria listeria or slowly molds. When you get pregnant, just be sure to ask your Dr but during TTC, go for it.

I get such conflicting information on this topic. The label indeed said it was in fact pasteurized, but the only thing that worried me was that it was at room temperature. They have always had that one certain cheese at room temperature as long as I can remember. If I wasn't TTC, I wouldn't have thought a thing about it, shouldn't there be like some warning label or something? This is driving me crazy, all this woman wants is some slivers of her parmesan reggiano! haha. I swear I think I tried to 'google' about the cheese for like 4 hours one day just trying to find a definite answer.....I'm sure the doctor would just tell me what any pregnancy website says, but the only person who would truly be able to answer it would be someone who really knows how the cheese is made, handled, and safe storage along with a medical perspective. This is too mind boggling of a process just to eat cheese. LOL!!! Oh well........I guess I can feed it to my husband and cry as I watch him eat it. hahahaha. jk.
