Frustrated after Dr appt

So I went to my doctor's today to get information on what I should be doing. We have been trying for a couple months now and my AF has always been different each month. And everytime I use an ovulation kit it ALWAYS says negative. SO I talked to my doctor and all he could say was "Give it more time" What kind of answer is that?

I'm sory you had a difficult appointment today. Have you tried charting ? There are plenty of doctors who will help with things and/or testing earlier if you

I'm sorry you had that experience. I think it's really important to have a doctor who is on the same page as you are. I'm not sure if you have a long-standing relationship with this doctor, but it might not be a bad idea to try seeing someone else.

I went to a new doc for the first time this month. We just started TTC, it was our first cycle trying, and my first cycle temping. I had no real proof that anything was wrong, except for a few off cycles in the past year where AF arrived 2-3 weeks late. That was enough to make me worried something was "off".

Long story short, I went to see this (very highly recommended) doc. I was very honest about how we just started trying, but I was worried b/c of my cycles, etc., and was all prepared to get the "give it time, give it more time" speech. I was SO RELIEVED when he basically said that he would totally support me if I wanted to be proactive. He sat with me, listened, answered all my questions, and we talked about the initial steps of testing.

The reality is that when both partners are totally healthy and there are no problems, it can still take time to conceive. However, that being said, I don't think its ANYONE'S place to tell you to wait wait wait, especially if you have legitimate concerns. The initial steps of looking into things are usually very basic, such as blood work, etc. We're not talking invasive testing or surgery or something.

I'm not assuming there is anything wrong in your case at all, but I don't think there is anything wrong with looking into it a little to get some piece of mind. The less stress in this process, the better!!!

If you want, give it another few cycles. You should definitely temp if you don't already. If you're still concerned, and the doc won't help, I say find a new doc.

I am sorry that your Dr appt went the way it did. And I agree with the PPs that maybe you should consider seeing a different Dr.

Regarding the temping, I started charting in January, and am continuing with it now even though we've had to stop TTC for the time being because I'm having some health issues. I feel that charting your temps really gives you an insight into what you're body is doing. Also, if you're not ovulating for whatever reason, then temping will indicate that. My OBGYN insists that I chart my temps, since I have PCOS and do not ovulate normally. There are different sites that will help you chart your temps; I use fertilityfriend.com. The basic charting is free, and there's a lot of wonderful information on the sight, including a whole "how-to" lesson. You'll want to get a Basal Body Temperature (BBT) thermometer, which you can get at any drugstore (mine cost $10). Take your temperature before you get up every morning, while you're still in bed, and try to do it at the same time every day. It takes some getting used to, but for me, it's already a habit, which is why I'm still doing it. Feel free to ask a lot of questions on here as well.

Best of luck!

You would need to get a basal body thermometer. Walmart sells them for like $8. My RE likes to see the charts because if the charting is done right it can be very accurate. I temp vaginally which is a little bit more of a pain but I find it to be more accurate for me than orally temping. Fertility Friend is a great resource for temping. It has free software that you can sign up for and offers a free charting ecourse to get you started. It was because of charting and using my CBEFM that I have really started to understand my cycles more and I have been trying for over 1 year. I would also buy another alarm clock. I temp much earlier than I need to wake up because sometimes my schedule changes and I have to get up earlier and this takes care of that. So I have a separate alarm clock just for my temping which I got at Walmart as well for like $5. I HTH !

hi,
i'm sorry you had such an unreceptive doctor. yuck.

one option is to see a naturopath. i see one in addition to my western-med-style doc, and she is brilliant. responsive, treats me like i'm not making things up and like i am the expert on my experience. she knows what my concerns and health needs are based on listening to me. AND she uses the least intervention possible to help me achieve my results.

it sucks because she's not covered under my insurance, but i scrape the money together when i need to.

If you want to start temping, check out fertilityfriend.com. They have a great how-to section. You'll want to temp once a day, first thing in the morning, before you even get out of bed. I keep my BBT thermometer right by the bed and as soon as the alarm goes off, I temp and then get up. I take my temps orally, but a lot of women do it vaginally. HTH.
