"Give it at least a year...."

I've heard that a lot of docs won't even consider there might be a problem until you've been trying for at least a year. I actually had a friend who went to the doc, and they wouldn't even start any blood tests, lab work, etc. for over 6 months. It turns out that by the time they figured out that there WAS a problem, and what it was, it was almost a year down the road. I felt such frustration for her, the whole situation was so sad.

I totally understand that not every couple conceives immediately, and its probably very common to have to try for awhile, even when everything is totally fine with both partners. But for someone to tell you to wait up to a year, I think that's crazy.

So are these doctors just being conservative, and trying to avoid having to medicate us and do any procedures that might be unnecessary? Or do a lot of us, such as my dear friend, end up wasting precious time because of this?

For those of you who are on clomid or ANYTHING else to assist you in this process, how long did you try before the doctor agreed to look into what the problem might be?

TIA!

Actually, DH had a SA before we got married, due to a varicocele (sp??). He knew about this for years and wanted to get it checked out just in case it did affect his sperm count. Luckily, it doesn't and he's fine. Coincidentally, that was also the source of my friend's problems. Her husband had the same thing, only to a larger degree, and he was basically infertile. He wound up having surgery just over a year after they started TTC.

As I type this, I realize that a lot of their frustrations could have been avoided if he'd had that checked out earlier. I'm NOT blaming him by any means, I'm just saying that her doc wanting to not rush into checking HER out was really not the problem. They probably wouldn't have found anything anyway. I guess her situation just made me feel for all the women who do have something that could be aided in some way, but don't know it yet because no one will check it out.

Anyway, as for me, DH is ok, which is half the battle. I'm concerned about my recent irregularity but I'm perfectly ok with trying for a number of months before I assume there is a problem. I have this doc appt. anyway (I actually made it before we decided to start trying), so I'm going to mention that we're TTC and I have a list of questions for him. We'll take it from there.

That's good that he's ok!

If you feel there is an issue though I would push the MD alittle.

Thanks...I'm so sorry for what you're going through, and that's EXACTLY what I'm talking about. Best of luck to you!
