I remember people talking about this a while ago and was wondering if any one could give me information on how to use my gazillion OPK's as a pregnancy test!! Thanks a bunch!!

I know I have read posts where people talk about the fact that OPK's measure the same hormone as HPT but I'm not sure if I would trust that with accuracy.

I'm not sure how it would work, as OPK's test for luteinizing hormone (LH) which spikes right before ovulation. Pregnancy tests test for human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) which is produced by the embryo after it implants. I believe the technology behind the tests is pretty specific, so I can't see how a test for LH would detect HCG. But maybe there is some cross-sensitivity there. I would also be interested to hear if anyone has more information.

HPT and OPK do not measure the same hormone. OPK measures luteinizing hormone and HPT measured HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). BUT, people have said that these hormones are so similar that you can use the OPK to measure for HCG (but not the other way around). That is only what I have read, I don't know if that has been confirmed by any doctors. Hope this helps.

This idea is definitely making the rounds of all the TTC boards. This was the best explanation I have found - who knows if it's true for you but it seems to have worked for some people:

Seems like for it to work you would have to be using a very sensitive OPK, that would show a positive at a lower concentration than the HPT you are using.

Thank you so much for posting that link!

I have had the same exact question and that was a very good article!

Wendy,

No problem. I was pretty confused when I kept running across the idea everywhere but no explanation. It took me a lot of searching to find detailed info so I thought other people could use it too.

Good luck to you this cycle!
