I am getting a tube check up (HSG?) on Monday and wanted to know if anyone else out there has had one done. What is it like? What does the doctor do? Hurts? Side effects? I have heard that the chances to get pregnant are higher after it. Anyone knows why?

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Thanks and ++++ vibes for everyone.

I had mine done last cycle and it was no big deal. I had my Gyno meet me at the hospital, and she performed the procedure for me. ( I felt more comfortable having my Gyno. rather than an x-ray tech. or Radiologist do it ) I had no cramping afterwards but I did take 2 advil before I had it done. You might want to do the same just in case, some women do have cramping afterwards. I thought the HSG was really awesome to watch! You get to see the dye flow through your tubes and the radiologist was there explaining everything to me. The only uncomfy part was inserting the tube into my cervix and they expected me to keep my legs open for awhile with no support. All in all the procedure was quick and painless. Good luck and relax, it will be over before you know it!!

Hi there! I had this done in June. I think every doctor does things a little differently. I had a balloon inserted into my uterus an then blown up a little, and then the dye. It was not painful at all. I did have some cramps during the procedure, I agree with the last post, take a few advil, I did, and I'm positive it helped. It is really cool seeing the monitor, and the pictures afterwards. I had this done 7 years ago and was pg with dd 2 month's later, after trying for over a year. Nothing wrong was found in either case, but they say it kinda opens your tubes, even if no obstructions are found, there could be some little things flushed out. I did spot a little afterwards, but thats all. My next AF was different, no cramps but I passed alot more tissue, mucus blood clots, (sorry TMI). Take deep breaths, and remember it's over in minutes, good luck!

Hope this helps!

Hi!

I just had my HSG performed on Monday of this week. I agree with the previous two posts. Taking a couple Advils will help if you do experience cramping. I did not have any cramping during or after the procedure, but the radiologist said that most women do experience some cramping. They said that cramping doesn't necessarily mean that there's something wrong like tube blockage. She said that a women's uterus might start to contract just because of there's a foreign substance (the dye) entering it.

They set you up on the x-ray table, and basically have you lay down like during your GYN exam. After they have you set-up, then they insert the catheter in (that's how they get the dye through your cervix. Mine went smoothly...and it is very cool to see the dye flowing through your tubes. She had me lay on the table for about 5 minutes after the procedure so I could get my bearings.

I was back at work in an hour, and was fine the rest of the day. I wish you the best of luck with yours. I've heard that your chances of pregnancy increase in the 3 months following the HSG because the dye will flush and clean out your tubes, so that the egg and sperm travel more easily. I think that's why. I'm hoping it's true for both of us...fingers crossed :-)

Good Luck! Let us know how it goes. Here's some "Dye Flow Easy Vibes" for you.

Thanks gals for sharing your experiences and thoughts.

I am really excited about it (hopefully increasing our chances to conceive!). We have been TTC for 12 months and see this as one of our last few hopes. I will keep you all posted.

Thanks again!!!

I had two HSG's in the past year. The most recent one was July 2nd. Unfortunately, my experiences were not very good, esp. the first one. I had severe cramping during and for the next 24 hours. However, I'm the biggest baby in the world. The second one was done while I was having laparscopic surgery. I was under general anesthesia and fortunately did not feel a thing. There was cramping when I woke up, though. My tubes were not blocked and hopefully the three month thing will work. I think it will definitely help if you are able to stay relaxed during the procedure. I can not relax at all! Good luck...everything will be fine.
