Hi Janet- I had this done this past cycle and it did show a problem- malformed uterus. After TTC for 2 1/2 years I was glad to at least know...I would never recommend anyone waiting to have this done- what a waste of time all this ttc for nothing!

For me the proceedure was not too bad. It was like an uncomfortable pap. When they put the dye up it was a very cold sharp sensation, but not really painful at all. I was lucky enough not to have any cramping, though I know some have had pain. After, all the stuff they put in you comes out- make sure you have a pad. There is also some bleeding and I spotted for a couple of days. That was about it- life as normal afterwards really. It is kinda cool to see what you're uterus and tubes look like- though I hope yours looks better than mine!

GL!

I found it to be painful. I think if something is blocking your tubes it can hurt. My tubes were clean but they found a polyp. They do leave the equipment (something he called a balloon inside) make sure that they got everything. That was the worse, I just wanted to push like I was in labor. What was probably 2 mins felt like a life time. I had some cramping that day, mostly layed on the couch and milked it. Then spotting for like 5. GL it is worth it.

Hi Janet,

I had an HSG sone on Sept 2nd and I found it really uncomfortable. I have a vagel response (I basically pass out when I have blood taken or anything) so that was definitely part of the discomfort. They found that one of my tubes appeared blocked (didn't show up on the screen) and the other has slight damage (a hydrosalpinx-- basically a dilated tube with fluid in it). Based on this "abnormal" result, I was referred to an Infertility Specialist. She is going to redo the HSG because she said it doesn't really give her enough info. There may have been a slight contraction in the tube that kept it from filling with dye or there might have been a little temporary kink in it. She wants to do it herself so that she can see first hand what's going on.

I explained to her how uncomfortable the procedure was for me and she said that she likes to use a little local anethetic on the cervix to decrease the pain (you might ask your dr about this if you are sensitive to pain/discomfort) and she recommends taking 4 advil (the other Dr recommended 1 or 2).

I'm not too worried about having it done again. Even thought the procedure was uncomfortable, it was only about 20 minutes (usually it's only 10 but he had trouble getting through my cervix)-- I can take anything for 20 minutes. Especially if it is going to give me such valuable information!

You'll do fine. Let us know how it goes.

It is otherwise known as the dye test. I'll get this wrong, I know, but it stands for hystostereogram( I think). It is a proceedure in which the Dr injects a dye through your cervix to fill your uterus and tubes so they can be seen on x-ray. It checks for any uterus abnormalities and tube blockages that may be causing infertility.

Thanks for all your valuable info. I can't wait for it to be over. I am nervous on what they might find. I hope it will help achiieve our goal. 11 months of nothing is getting hard to swallow. After this I go see a fertility specialist in Nov.

Janet,

I also have had this test done twice. 7-1/2 years ago and again 4 month's ago. I recommend taking a few advil before hand, you'll have some slight cramping. It is uncomfortable, but for me not painful at all. When they insert the catheter into the cervix, it can be uncomfortable and when the balloon is inserted and blown up, you may have some cramping. It was a breeze for me, but I also had nothing wrong, no blockages or problems. My advice is to try not tense up (I know this can be hard) and breath deeply.

The first time I had the test done I conceived dd 2-3 month's later, you know many women conceive within 3 month's of having it done.

Good Luck, I'll be sending relaxing vibes your way on Wednesday.
