insurance question

My question is about getting pregnant and being covered by insurance. I just changed jobs a couple months ago and my insurance won't kick in until 90 days - which will be November 1st. I went off my BCP pills a week or so ago so we could start trying. My concern is this - and I didn't really think about it until the other day. If I happen to get really, really lucky and conceive this month (even though I'm sure that is unlikely considering I don't know anything about my cycle yet) - my insurance would not cover anything about my pregnancy would they? I have that Fertility book and it had a coulpe in there that according to their doctors they conceived 2 weeks before they claim they did and that was 2 weeks before her insurance kicked in. Is this true - should we hold off until after November 1st when I know I have my insurance? I wasn't sure if anyone had this experience before.

Read into your insurance, or call someone in Claims with your soon-to-be insurance company (your HR dept should be able to give you a phone # to call now). Generally a pregnancy isn't considered a "pre-existing condition" for insurance sake, though some insurance companies/policies are more "evil" than others. I've read that story in TCOYF too, and thought it sounded a little far-fetched.

Good luck to you!

It could be considered a pre-existing condition. Although you might check so see if the the pre-existing condition starts during your waiting period or once you're on the plan. Also, what coverage are you on now? Cobra? If you have some temporary coverage, HIPAA requires that the new plan not penalize pre-existing conditions. So you might go out and find a plan for a couple of months just to be sure. My sister is self-employed and has a plan with a really high deductible that should count for HIPAA continuity.

I don't have insurance right now - because my last company insurance lasted through August so I didn't think about getting anything since my new insurance would kick in November 1st. It's only a month away so I don't know if I need to get anything for a month or not. I will have Signa and I don't know anything about them so I'm trying to find them on the internet to see what they say. Thanks for the help.

I doubt very much you'd have a problem. My husbands company changed insurance with our last pregnancy, and it was never considered a pre existing - I think you have a few things in your favor -

1. I think it may even be a law that insurance companies cannot consider pregnancy a pre existing condition.

2. Pre existing conditions are usually not covered if you're insurance coverage has lapsed a certain amount of time - it could be up to a year or 6 months.

I'd do an internet search on pregnancy as a pre exsisting condition and see if this is a law.
