Just found out I have cystic ovaries :(

I had a sonogram a couple of weeks back and the woman doing it said everything appeared to be normal. Then just now I got a call from the NP in the office who said that while overall everything looked ok, my ovaries appear to be "slightly cystic". I basically asked her if that means I have PCOS and she could formally diagnose me b/c she's not an MD, but....she basically said that's the deal.

I'm so bummed.

Anyone out there with the same thing? Will this drastically reduce my chances of conceiving? I'm in the 2WW right now and feel like with that phone call all my hopes were dashed.

Waiting for AF to do Day 3 bloodwork and then going back to doc.

I'm so sorry you have to go through this. It shouldn't hinder your chances so much, but it may make it a little more difficult than the average woman, but our bodies do wokr in mysterious ways and this could not affect your chances at all. All it means is that you and your Dr. are going to have to develop a plan of action, and be more agressive about getting you pg. There are lots of options for women with PCOS. Clomid has worked wonders for the ladies I have come into contact with that have PCOS and there is also IUI and IVF that are there too. Try to keep your head up, and it will turn out fine.

Good luck!! :) (((hugs)))

Thanks for the encouragement. This DOES explain some of my recent irregularity, but for the most part, I do get a period every month and she said that's a great sign.

Thank goodness I have an awesome doc who is totally supportive and was willing to look into everything, even before we knew about this. I'm going to be beginning the initial fertility tests as soon as AF arrives. Clomid was already mentioned when I spoke to her, also.

Thanks for the support.

Hey,
I was diagnosed with PCOS more than 5 years ago and have learned quite a bit about it from doctors and seminars. The one misconception is that you will definitely have a harder time getting pregnant, while that can be the case with some, it is completely on an individual basis. PCOS is a full syndrome, fertility is just one part of it. With the syndrome you can have just one or all of the other symptoms, including but not limited too: excessive weight gain, metabolic issues, insulin resistance, excess hair growth (particularly on the face, lower abdomen, etc), ovarian cysts, abdominal issues, and a few less common ones...There are many options if you have PCOS, the most popular is going on Metformin (Glucophage) to stabilize the insulin resistance that is associated with the PCOS which in turn can help treat the cyst issue and assist in regulating ovulation/menstruation. Having a gyn diagnose you is the best way as there's a slue of bloodwork (checking everything from blood sugar to hormone levels), U/S and a full physical, all of which is needed to confirm the disorder (you can have cysts and not necessarily be polycystic from other medical issues). A lot of GP's don't know a whole lot about the disorder and frequently overlook it and improperly treat it. However, through diet change, exercise modification and medication it is very likely treatable in most cases. It can be an annoying thing to live with, but you can also live a completely normal life if you take charge of it :)

Anyway that's my spiel about that, I wish you luck on your TTC journey, you're definitely on the right path investigating things :)

I'm sorry about this. It sounds like you have a fantastic doctor on your team that will help you through this. I am currently awaiting bloodwork to see if I have this too. My only symptom is irregular periods and unpredictable ovulation. Other than that, I don't have any of the classic symptoms. I do have a strong history of diabetes in

I was diagnosed with PCOS and a few other things in Feb '09. It is definately important to learn about it and formulate a plan with your dr. It may also be worth looking into an RE if you are not working with one already. My symptoms of pcos are relatively mild and I ovulate on my own, just not regularly my cycles have varied from 22 days to almost 50. My RE believes that my Oing is weak which is part of my trouble with sustaining a pg. I was also placed on metformin to help with it. I HTH

Aww, I'm sorry you got this news!! Don't let it dash your hopes, though. My BF has cystic ovaries and she's one of the most fertile people I know! You definitely O'd, so you still have a chance! GL!!

Thanks everyone for all your support!!!

Kinny -
I've been reading up on it also and one thing I have to say is that aside from an occasional late period (twice in the past year), I do not have ANY of those other symptoms. I've read about the facial hair and the thinning hair at the scalp, and I don't have that. I also do get a period every 29-35 days, for the most part. She said that's a great sign.

I guess I'm wondering if this means that I definitely have PCOS. She mentioned that the ovaries are slightly cystic. Is it possible to have cystic ovaries and have it be from something else?? I'm reading that PCOS is due to a hormone imbalance. When I skipped my period over the summer and went for some blood work to check it out, that seemed ok. Is it possible that I do NOT have PCOS? I'll know more when I actually speak to the doc. Right now I've just talked to the NP and she doesn't feel like she can give me an official diagnosis.

What do you think??

Thanks again.
