If someone usually ovulates later in their cycle - myself, around day 20, do they usually have more problems conceiving than someone who ovulates a more text book day 14?

From what I've heard, a person with shorter cycles has more chances to conceive since they O more in any given year as opposed to someone who has longer cycles. But from what I understand, as long as your eggs and his sperm are "healthy" and you BD at the right times, it shouldn't be more difficult to conceive just because you O at a later date. You're still O'ing, so I don't think the specific date matters. ALthough I'm interested in other people's opinions on this...

I hope you are right! Good luck to you.

We are TTC #3. #1 took 18 months to conceive (I ended up on clomid and we did an IUI) . #2 came along with only 2 tries:) But now #3 seems to be stubborn to be coming along. I am very nervous that it is going to be more difficult again this time like the first. I was on the pill before trying to have #1 and when I came off I never got AF, hence being put on Clomid and the IUI. So I don't really have past cycles to compare this to.

Oh no! I was on the pill for 2 months before stopping a week ago...how long were you on the pill before discovering it had stopped your cycles? GL to you too! :)

I was on the pill 3 years before stopping. But I think it had more to do with my exercisinng than being on the pill, that just masked the fact that my periods had stopped. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I will say that no I don't think that O'ing later decreases your chances apart from the fact that if you have CD14 O like clockwork you will O more in a given year than someone that O's later, however I O'd on July 20 which was CD23 for me and I'm now about 8 weeks along. I think the reason it took so long to conceive is because I wasn't charting, had no idea about CM and was BD'ing at all the wrong times (NOT that I didn't like it either way of course :)

Actually I was worried about the same problem. I think it depents on your luteal phase. If your luteal phase is more than 10 days it should be ok. If you are less than 10 it may cause some concern and you should consult a doctor. I called my doctor after reading about late o and luteal phase and he said I should chart a keep a diary. I may o at diff. times. Good luck! I hope both of us are fine!

Jean,

Hello my name is Julie, (29), DH (30) ttc #1 just this cycle! I also, like you, ov around the 20-21st I think (my cycles seems to be around 32-34 days so that would put me ov around a later time in the month as well) I was on the bcp for 11 yrs. and got off them in late March this year and started af the very next month and so on but the only difference with af now being off the bcp's is that they are longer than my standard 28 day cycle as before. I was wondering the same thing though, if it mattered that I ov later than 14 days as well. Just for that reason, since I was a bit unsure when I did ov (no clear sings to me, i.e., no cm, and other sings of it) so I bought the Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor and this is my first month using it. I am on cd 9 right now, just came of af on Aug. 27th and so far the monitor detects no "high fertility" yet but again, b/c I think I ov later I shouldn't even detect ov until cd 18-21 I think. Are you using an ov kit to find out when your LH surge is? Are you sure when you ov? We should talk and keep in touch on the board since we are kinda in the same boat, I don't know or have not talked to a lot of women who ov as last as us.

Keep in touch and let's try and compare this month when we ov. When did you finish af this month or rather when did you start af and what cd are you on?

Julie,

Thanks for the message. I am also 29 and DH is 30. It is comforting to hear someone else who is a late ovulator. I am using OP kits to detect ovulation and they seem to be working although I am getting nervous with this cycle (CD 20 and no positive sign yet:(

I am so tempted to get the clear blue fer mont, but I am going to hold off and if no preg this cycle I am going to get one. Please let me know how you like yours. Is it hard to use? I don't have much CM yet and I am getting nervous because I usually have more by this point. Today there is the beg of egg white but nothing too definite.

Is this baby #1 for you? Keep in touch and good luck to you:)

Jean,

Hello. Well, I do like the monitor a lot, right now I am at cd 11 and still no "high fertility yet" at all, starting to get a bit worried myself although, I do feel I have some time before ov. It is very easy to use, you set it the first day you have a "real flow" not spotting and set it to day 1 and each day you turn it on to see if it asks you to test (testing does not start until day 6 on the monitor) so at cd 6 it will ask you to start testing (the monitor assumes your af is over now at day 6) and you open the testing sticks and pee on them for 3 sec. (like hpt) and then you insert it into the monitor (comes with full instruction booklet with pic's) and you wait 5 min. for the monitor to read your urine, after it will tell you to take out the testing strip and you throw it away, the monitor will then display a bar on the left that indicates low or high fertility by how much of the bar is grayed out (you'll see when you get it) and it will most likely ask you to test up to day 20 if it has shown no signs of high fertility.

This would just confirm that I WILL NOT ov on cd 14 as the monitor I would think start to pick up horomone changes and tell me. Wow, so you're at cd 20 already? I think the monitor is much more accurate than the opk kits to me. It picks up your changes 4-5 days before ov even happens and the kits I think only about 1-2 days before. They are expensive ($200.00) if bought on line (some sites have it for about $175-189.00) and I got mine brand new off ebay for $125.00 + $10.00 shipping and it came within 5 days. The testing strips you buy for it are exp. as well (a box of 30 for $50.00) but again, ebay has those as well for really cheap. The first cycle (this is my first cycle using it) the monitor does not know your cycle (i.e., length or horomone levels) so normally after the monitor gets to know your cycles, it will ask you to only use 10 testing sticks per month but with my cycle being new to the monitor, it will ask for 20 sticks until it gets to know about the time I ov each month, so you may only get a months use out of one $50.00 box of testing sticks but the next month's box you should get about 3 months worth to test. I will for sure let you know if by say, the week of Sept. 7th, I get a "high fertility" on the monitor that would put me at cd 18 and if I do ov on cd 21, it should pick up my LH surge by then, if I do ov this month (my fear as well as yours). I have no CM at all right now and cp is low, hard and not much cm up inside as well (sorry, tmi) but I keep checking my cp each day to double check and see if it's moving up a bit or so.

Well, sorry this was too long but keep me informed as to what is happening and if you detect something, maybe you're going to ov really late this month. Are your af's like mine, 32-34 days or are your's longer than that, more like 40-42 days? If thats the case, you might not ov until 9-17 or so that week.

Yes, this is our first and this our first month really trying so I know we have plenty of time, but we're not getting any younger right? We want two so that is why I am getting ahead of things. My doc said if for some reason, I am not ov'lating (which is possible even though I get af each month) she will put me on Clomid (fertility drug to force ov) I don't know about you, I am not spending 2 yrs. ttc #1 just hoping it will happen one day, forget that, my doc is willing to move as fast as I am, I won't go on fertility drugs until I know for sure I am not ov, but so far, I don't think I ov last month as well this is why I bought this machine to double check it, it's suppose to be 99% recommended by all doc's.

Keep in touch please, I will keep checking this particular post to get updated info. from you and vice versa. Also, where are you guys from? We are from MI. This is your first ttc right?

I would say an egg is an egg! it will take a little longer just 'cuz the cycles are longer. If you see my announcement below I just got my BFP and I O'd on day 30!
