OPK Testing advice

I have noticed a few people posting questions regarding the use of OPK with morning urine. I found some information in one of my books I thought was really useful. I hope you find it useful!! Baby dust to all!

"If you do use the kits, we recommend using one that permits you to test at any time of the day, not one that insists upon testing only your first (early morning) urine sample. Unlike the BBT, these ovulation tests re not affected by emotion, illness or even most drugs. (Even the fertility drug Clomid doesn't affect them, although another major fertility drug - Pergonal- does.) So, unlike BBT, it is not important for you to test first thing in the morning in order to avoid misleading results caused by these various factors.

Some tests insist uon early morning urine (first urine) testing because they are very sensitive to excess liquid intake.. We like the Q Test system (which unlike most has an 800 number you can call for more inforamtion or assistance in using the product) because it allows you to test at any time of the day provided only that you test your urine at the same time each day. Even with this test, however, you are advised to avoid excessive liquid intake before collecting urine sample. Excessive liquid may dilute the amount of LH in your urine and give false readings.

We don't like early morning testing because of the nature of the LH surge. The LH "surge" is well named. It is a sudden dramatic release of hormone, with an immediate, very dramatic rise in the concentration of LH surge in the blood usually (but not always) occuring in the ealry morning. By the time the surge shows up in the urine, several hours have passed. One of the best studies we've seen on this subject indicates that a woman is most likely to detect the LH surge when she tests between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

So if you are going to test only once a day, pick a time between those hours and test each day at the same time during your testing period. The same study indicated the hours between 5 and 8 a.m. are actually the worst times to test. The second best time is between 5 and 10p.m."

Ok my fingers are tired. I got this from page 136 in the book How to Choose the sex of your baby by Dr. Shettles.

Cali,

Thanks so much for typing all that - I bet your poor fingers need a rest! I'll take all the OPK advice and tips I can get. If this is not my cycle, then I think I'll be trying OPKs next cycle just to be sure I am "O"ing for sure. Thanks again! :)

Cali,

Thanks for the info. I'm using OPK's for the first time this month and could use all the help I can get. I'm glad they mentioned 5-10pm is the second best time because I'd hate to be using the OPK at work between 11-3! LOL

Thanks again,

Chrissy

So happy I could be of service! This book was the best breakdown I could find about OPK. The funny thing is I bought it to see if there is any truth to trying to choose the sex of your child and now I am happy with anything I can get! LOL
