Ovulation with Negative OPKs?

Okay, I know I'm probably jumping the gun, and that my temp this morning might just need to be disregarded with the rule of thumb, but... has anyone ovulated despite a negative OPK result?

* I got negative OPKs on August 8-9-10-11. In every case, the test result line was lighter than the reference line. The result on the 9th was the darkest result line that I got - it actually made me go "hmm" - but it was still lighter than the reference line so I considered it negative.

* I had EWCM starting yesterday afternoon, which was a welcome surprise! (I'm coming off 9 anovulatory months... I didn't think I was capable of EWCM!) The EWCM continues this morning.

* I had a slight temp dip - my lowest reading of the cycle - yesterday. And my temp chart WAS looking textbook... but today I had a noticeable temp spike that's above my would-be coverline.

What are your thoughts? TIA!

Clomid Cycle (CC) 1, CD12

(I swore to myself I wouldn't get all in a tizzy over this charting stuff - so much for that!)

Well, I actually just read an article this morning in Pregnancy magazine that said OPK's are NOT accurate for all women, particularly those with PCOS and/or irregular periods (I think 9 annovulatory months can be considered irregular!). So don't totally disregard, but perhaps you should cover your bases and bd like bunnies!

Good luck!

Thanks for responding! I don't know why I even waste my money on those OPKs anyway - I don't trust them, and I'll believe my body and my chart over them any day, but I'm still using the dang things while I'm on Clomid. I guess I'll just plan on jumping my husband again when I get home from work for good measure. =)

Tami,

Do you still have your directions that came with your OPK's? I was re-reading mine last week and I recall something about drugs that cause inaccurate readings and I believe one of them was clomid. HTH.

Hi Tami,

I'm starting my first cycle with Clomid whenever AF shows, and what my RE told me was that I should consider a darker line a positive, and it doesn't necessarily have to be darker than the reference line. It just has to be darker than the other lines you were getting prior to that. So I think you might have gotten your surge on the 9th, which may mean that your temp today is a sign that you already ovulated! Congratulations! And you timed your BD perfectly, so I hope this is your month. I would definitely BD tonight just to make sure.

Good luck!! Hope to see your BFP post in a couple of weeks

Hi Tami,

My doc would disagree and has said that the OPKs are more accurate than the charting. I was quite angry with her when she told me that. (She is anti-charting, so take her opinion for what it's worth.) However, I think that Clomid affects OPKs. I would keep BD for awhile, just in case it hasn't come yet. You doctor should be monitoring your follicles if you're on Clomid. S/he should be able to tell when you O.
