Ovulation pain?

What does ovulation pain feel like? Is it like menstrual cramps or a sharp pain? Does it last for hours or just a couple sporatic moments? I am asking because I am on CD17 and had cramps all day yesterday. It seemed to originate from one side but by last night it was across my whole abdomen and into my lower back. This morning the pain is gone. Any ideas on what this could be? Thank you.

Hmmm, my O pain is usually just a little sharp twinge on my left or right side, lasting maybe an hour at most. But I have been having crampy type mentrual pains the last couple of days, so I was wondering too. Are you using OPKs? Mine have been - so far, been using them since cd11, have 2 left to take. But since this is my first month off BCPs, I realize I may not O at all. Ok, hopefully someone can give us some insight!

Hi Ladies,

I've never experienced O pain before, but I have experienced the pain you've described in your emails, and I was pregnant...The crampy feeling my be your uterus starting to stretch or could be from implantation. I'm just sharing my experience with the feelings you've been having. Good luck!

O pains are slightly different for everyone. I think it depends how many nerve endings you happen to have in your abdomen near the part of the ovary that is releasing the egg. I feel o pains almost every cycle and it ranges from mild achiness to intense pain. The first time I felt the really intense pain I thought I had appendicitis. As I've gotten older, my o pains last longer and are more intense. The pain can be caused by any of the following: 1.the swollen follicle getting ready to burst out and brushing against nerve endings

2.the actual rupture and release of the egg

3.the irritation caused by the small amount of blood that is released into the abdominal cavity at ovulation

4.the fallopian tubes contracting trying to move the egg along

This is all a long way of saying that if all of your other fertility signs tell you that it was ovulation time when you felt those pains then I'd bet that the pain was one of the four above things going on.

I hope this helps,

How many days after O did you experience this? Any cm to go with it? lol!

What I experienced was for the first time, so here goes again!:

+ OPK on CD11, sharp cramping pain on left side at 1pm on CD12, neg on OPK that day. Cramping moved across abdomen a bit, but mostly stayed on the left, higher than menstrual cramps. On CD15, I felt more of a twinge on the left side and some slight cramping on the uterus (negative OPK). I also had more fertile cm, still do. So, not sure which was O. CD12 or CD15-16?? Anyway, pretty sure I O'd one of those days..

Well, I never got a positive OPK, but I started testing on cd11. On cd 12, I had pain in the lower left side of my abdomen (felt like my usual O pains from previous ttc attempts) and ewcm. Less ewcm on cd 13, and gone by later in the day. Still haven't gotten a + OPK, have 2 more test to take, but I am not getting my hopes up since I just went off BCPs last cycle.

Erin,

Hmmm...that sounds like O pain! I feel it every month since I first started getting a period. Usually I get it on my right side, but some months, it is on my left. It is a pinching pain (or like a pull) and usually lasts between 12 and 24 hours. When I wake up the next morning, it is always gone (egg was released, in my case). It is really great to feel O pain because : 1) you can time your BD perfectly (before, during, after) 2) you actually KNOW for sure you are O'ing!

Only 20% of women feel it every month so I guess we are part of the really lucky one's.

Good luck!
