I got my prenatal vitamins today but am afraid to take them. First I can't swallow large pills, second last week I took a chewable centrum multi-vitamin and got very ill for the whole night. Anyone have a good chewable brand to recommend?

Also I take 400 mcg's of folic acid, can't I just eat healthy and not take a multi just the folic?

I also have a problem with prenatal vitamins. I break out in hives all over from all of the B vitamins in them. I am okay taking folic acid, but prenatal vits have so many B's, that I can't take them. I told my dr this and she said that is just fine. You just have to have a very healthy diet. In What to Expect When You Are Expecting they have their best odds diet. I am just going to follow that to get the best nutrition possible. Hope this helps!

I always have gotten sick off of multi-vitamins, but in college the school's trainer told me to take the vitamins right after I ate with a glass of milk. My stomach is apparently too sensitive to handle the vitamins.

I just thought this might be a good suggestion.

When my sister was pg her multivitamins would make her sick so she started taking them with food. Some people claim that they are not as "effective", but her doctor said that it would be fine, especially if she didn't feel sick then.

It is very helpful. Maybe that is why my multi makes me ill. I'll have to contact the dr. after I find out and see what she says. I am taking the folic acid and I eat pretty darn well. Thanks for your advice.

That would be great but unfortunatley my body doesn't process milk or ice cream. It's weird, cheese and sour cream and yoghurt are just fine. I've even tried acidopholus and lactaid to no avail! :(

Thanks. I do that too but I just must be sensitive to them. Darn it!

I have heard some individuals who cannot tolerate taking large pills and getting ill from prenate vitamins take 2 chewable childrens Flinstones vitamins instead.

I remember when I was pg was our first, the doctor gave me a prenatal vitamin called PreNate. I got so ill from it. I then checked the ingredients and the main ingredient was carnuba wax, which is what my husband uses to wax our car!!! YUCK!!! I called the doctor immediately and told him I wanted something as close to all natural as possible. He switched me and the next vitamin was 100% better!

Good Luck!

Thanks Donna :) That is really great to know. I picked up some pre-care chewables and we'll see how that goes tomorrow.
