I'm not pregnant yet (as far as i know, I'm in the 2ww), but I began taking non-prescription prenatal vitamins with 800mcg of folic acid many months ago to prepare before we started TTC. My doctor had said that 800mcg was perfect for during pregnancy so I'm not sure what else would be in the prescription one that would make it better than the regular one you can buy normally.

My doctor also told me that 800mg was what I should be getting. I told her that I was already taking a multi that includes 400mg of folic acid and a 400mg supplement. Since I was already taking what she recommended she didn't want to write my a prescription until I was actually pregnant. Did your dr. have any other reason for you being on actual prenatals?

I've used OTC prenatals since TTC my son (so over 3.5 yrs), I even by generic CVS brand, I took them in one day and my dr said that was fine.

Hi :)

I'm not really sure what is in the Rx prenatals, but my doctor says she likes to get people who are TTC onto them before they are pg rather than introduce them when the morning sickness is kicking in.

GL with your seach on prenatals, I do know that almost all OB recommend you start the prenatals as soon as you start TTC (I've actually read that all women of child bearning age should take prenatals, just in case).

Just a note on the cheapy prenatals. I was taking the Walgreens prenatals at first. We then switched to an organic prenatal vitamin (New Chapter brand) and - WOW! OMG! What a difference! I immediately felt better than I'd felt before. So, I could most definitely tell a difference in quality and I've never even considered going back. Just a thought to consider - you might get what you pay for when it comes to vitamins.

I had a question regarding iron. My multivitamin from Nature Made contains 25mg of Iron I believe. I guess I eat foods with iron on top of that (salads and such), is it harmful to be getting iron from more than the prenatal? Like is it possible to overdose on the iron from food in conjunction with the vitamin? My concern is mainly because of my recent nausea and constipation so I wasn't sure if that was a symptom of the iron...

It is possible to overdose on iron, however I take a prescription prenatal that I believe has iron in it, and a 65mg iron tablet with it.

Thanks for the info. I don't suppose iron can cause a low grade fever can it? lol
