Does anyone know how soon you normally get scheduled for an appt with your OB after you find out you are pregnant?

I got a BFP this morning and then called to set up an appt thinking I needed to come in soon. They told me I do not need an appt until 8 weeks! That is 4 weeks away!!! I think that is a bit crazy.. they said they do not even want me to come in just to make sure I am PG.

I am really uneasy about this and just wanted to know if anyone had experience with this. I am going to check the web now but thought I would ask here too! You all have tons of answers!!!

Thanks!

Jen

Jen, i really wouldnt worry about it. I believe I first saw my OB at around that time. Not to dampen your spirits, but early m/c are not uncommon during this period, and as bad as it sounds i think they want to wait until at least then to see you b/c of this, just in case. Plus there isn't anything they can do for you this early anyhow. An HPT is as good of confirmation as they can give you, at least that's what my old OB told me for my first pg. They can really just date the pg and measure your belly even just at 8 weeks, and that is all.

Sorry this is probably not the answer you were looking for but rest assured this is normal operating procedure, no need to insist on coming in earlier

Congrats on your BFP!!

have a happy and healty 9 months

Thank you so much... an answer I don't like is definately better than no answer! I am glad you told me the truth and did not just tell me what I want to hear. I would hate to go screaming at the Dr's office for no reason.

I feel lucky that I am have the web and am planning on getting lots of books to tell me everything I want to know... plus this site and the March 04 board I will be moving too. I just wanted to hear it from them. Oh well...

I did know that early m/c are common. My mother actually had 2 before having me so that makes me a bit nervous. I am not sure if that can run in the family or not.. so, needless to say we are waiting a bit to tell anyone outside the immediate family!

Thanks so much for the quick response... I do feel better now!

Hi Jen!

Right after my BFP, I called them to get a blood test done to make sure that I was indeed pregnant. They said I don't need an appointment, just come in whenever. I went in that day and after it was for sure positive, I made my first appointment. I don't remember having to wait until I was 8 weeks, though. The first appointment was mostly informational. They got information from me and gave information to us about being pregnant. That appt was with a nurse, it wasn't with the OBGYN. I believe that at 9 weeks I had my first "exam" appointment.

Then again--this was 4 years ago. I could be remembering it all wrong. What's most important is what is comfortable for you. Each person as well as each doctor is different.

Good luck!

I was at week 9 when I went for my first appointment. It was my first baby and I was anxious to go, too, but really, there isn't much to do prior to this. At the appointment they took blood, a lot of it, we talked at length with my dr, she did an evalutation but no pap since I'd recently had one. Tried to listen to the heartbeat but couldn't get it so I went back at 11 weeks. He was all over the place, took forever to find it. I didn't have an u/s until 18 weeks, which was fine by me. The most amazing event. Congrats, and try not to worry.

Jen, I work in an OB office and we generally won't see newly pregnant people until 8-10 weeks. If you got a BFP by a HPT then you are good to go. So try to be calm and patient. Now if you start to get spotting or cramping then call the dr's office and let them know. Then they might have to come in sooner. Good Luck and Congrats!

clarification. the day I found out I was pg from an hpt my husband insisted I go get a blood test right then. I called my dr.s office and told them I wanted a blood test for pregnancy. My dr. had told me at my pap that if I thought I was pg just to call and come in for a test. Well, they tried to just do urine, but since it was still early and not first morning urine the test was extrememly faint. I insisted I wanted a blood test, even if the test wasn't faint I wanted one, so the nurse finally gave me the slip to go to the blood lab and get it drawn. Think the results of that took a day or two. I did not see my dr. for this, it was not an appointment really. But it was nice to have the confirmation. Except that my HGC (is that the hormone? can't remember now) levels were low, so they made me come back a week later. Hellooooo! Of course they are low, I was barely pregnant! But I went back anyway and all was fine.

Thank you all for your advice! It makes me feel so much better! I am glad this is normal and I will just have to wait it out.

Thanks again and good luck to all of you... sprinkling very, very new baby dust!
