i'm new to all this stuff... just started charting this month, actually-

anyway... i know i shouldn't try this month, cuz of my mc earlier this month, but i am charting, so i've got a clear idea of when to try, ya know?

but, i was wondering, do you really need to get a special thermometer?? what's the difference anyway? do you take the temp different, or what? sorry if that's a really stupid question, but i'm just learning! heehee~

and where can you buy them?? would Target or Walmart have them? and would they be by the OPKs, and HPTs, or would they be by the thermometers? what did you pay for yours?

anyway, thanks for any answers!

You need a special thermometer - a BBT thermometer (BBT = basal body temperature). These thermometers are more accurate than fever thermometers. I got mine at Walgreen's; I asked the pharmacist where to find them, and they stocked them by the other thermometers. Some stores stock them by the OPKs and HPTs. Some women have found theirs at Target, but I know the one by me doesn't carry them. And finally, you can always buy one online. The prices are typically $6.99 - $9.99.

I highly recommend the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler to go along with your new charting regimen - it gives a lot of insight to interpreting your charts.

Good luck to you!

Some people say you have to have a BBT others say a regular therm. is ok. I have been temping with both each morning for about 3 weeks. Outside of one day both reading are pretty much within .2 degrees of each other. When one goes up they other one does as well. They are both showing the same trend. In another week or two I'm going to post two charts from the same time period...one with BBT, one with regular therm.

It's my opinion that since you are looking for the general trend in temps that either thermometer would work fine. My first 2 months I temped with a regular therm. and was able to see where I O'd just fine.

You can check out my last few charts. This chart I am using the temps from BBT (i have the regular temps on paper).

I use/used a regular digital thermometer, and it worked just fine for me!
