When you get preggers and have you baby do you plan to return to work (if you working now) or stay home!?!

Or are you going to do a combination like work part time/stay home part time,

DH work part time/you work part time,

Or you or DH stay home

I think I am leaning towards part time work. Or even subbing. I work in early childhood Childcare centers and we have a sub pool and I might just join that. That way i can get hours that work for me. And keep my benifits.

It's not just the US that doesn't pay full pay or 90 odd % pay.

I'm in the UK and will get 90% pay for 6 weeks, then £120 a week, (which is about a 3rd of what I get paid now) for 20 weeks (I think), then no pay for 6 months. (Your job would be held open for 1 year from the start of your maternity leave, then after that I guess you'd leave).

We are lucky in that we have the NHS, but our bills basically equal one salary, and that doesn't quite include food and diesel (gas), diesel is now £1.08 per litre, so it probably works out at about $8 or $9 a gallon.

Utilities have also gone up so much recently over here. It's costing about £80 or around $120 just for Gas (heating gas) and electricity bills.

At least out Mortgage is fixed rate for 10 years (tied in for 5) so we know what we are paying per month for that.

My SIL is Pg already, so maybe when our time comes we could work something out between us for child care, although she lives about 30 miles / 1 hour

Well, I think DH and I have this all figured out.... although with this being my first child, I totally reserve the right to change my mind!!! Although, DH won't allow it :)

DH is by far the breadwinner in our family, but he and I know that we wish to maintain the same lifestyle we do now, so in order to do that, I'll continue working. My mom worked full-time when I was a kid, and I feel like I really benefited from it, so I'm not too concerned! Now, I will say that full-time childcare in a center runs about $280/week here, so that will take a bite out of our budget. My office recently started trying out 4 day workweeks, so I'm hoping that works well and continues on. That would be a nice benefit for sure! DH currently has insurance fully paid for himself thru his office. I have an HSA plan, which basically covers nothing until I pay out my $3,000 deductible... all for the bargain rate of $250/month. Once baby comes, we will all be on DH's insurance, which is much better, but expensive none the same... something like $350/month for me and baby to be added. Oh well....

Down the road, I'd like to go down to part time - possibly 3 days/week. I know myself too well, and I know I would lose my mind being at home full-time. Plus, I LOVE what I do, and I think doing something you love outside of the home makes for a good role-model/mother. DH is up for partnership opportunities in the next 5 years, so once that happens, i'll most certainly be a SAHM, but at that point, will be highly involved in PTA, school stuff, charitable organizations, etc.

Good questions!

I don't work outside the home. We homeschool, so that takes up a lot of my time and energy!

I do think it is important for my children to see me the mom as a working role model. But at the same time I dont want to miss those first couple of years, and I will want to work once my children are in school all day. I think this could all change like many peple have said. Either once we get PG or once we have our child. And it is def. a personal choice.
