I read your very informative response to Tara...thank you for that! I hope you don't mind if I prey on your infertility knowledge and ask you a similar question :)
DH and I have no fertility problems that we are aware of (we're only on C4 of TTC after 10+ years of BCP). Anyway, I was wondering what affect alcohol can have on sperm...and eggs for that matter. DH and I both used to consume a couple of glasses of wine or beer every night...sometimes more on weekends. I quit all together when we began TTC but DH did not. However, this cycle he has successfully joined me in not drinking at all. I guess my main question is this...If drinking had been affecting his quality and/or quantity, how long should it take for things to get back to normal?
Also, since a woman is born with all of her eggs, have I compromised my chances by my past alcohol intake? Or should I be okay since the eggs still have to go through the maturation process?
Thanks so much for any advice you're able to provide...this question is one I've been wondering about for a whle but never knew who to ask.
Cheers!
Lori

Hi, nice to meet you. And YES!!! Ladies ALCOHOL effects sperm and eggs. More research has been done on sperm more than eggs. It is my understanding that the sperm DH is producing today was made 3-6 weeks ago. Now, I am not sure if that is still true b/c with research you never can tell. Remember when chicken eggs were bad for you, then they were good for and now they are bad for you? :) Our advice to patients were to discontinue the use of caffiene, alcohol, OTC cold meds and nicotine of any kind, including snuff, dip and chewing tobacco.
Sorry I could not be more help about the effects alcohol has on human eggs.
Funny story now, not so funny then.......... One morning I was at work and a gentlemen came in with his specimen for SA. With our program we offered to let the patients see what their specimen looked like under the microscope. I put the slide under and looked for myself first and realized where there was an abundunce ~ 60-70 mil, they were just moving sluggish and seemed to have no direction. Someone who was drunk might act the same way. I started asking questions about his activities the last month and he mentioned he had been to a Jimmy Buffet concert where he had gotten totally wasted. So we decided to wait 6 months and retest. So, were the swimmers drunk? Who knows, but I think they were and he was more than fine when we retested. Motility good and seem to swim in a straight pattern.
Sorry to have rambled.
Take care and let me know how things turn out.
Spreading Baby Dust to all!!!!!!!!!!!!
