Hello ladies,

I have a question regarding OPK's. The Answer brand to be exact. I bought a kit on Sunday and used it right away.

Hi Rachel.

I used the Answer OPK this past cycle for the first time as well and had some issues with it.

It sounds to me like you saw your surge. I've used OPKs every month for two years, and do agree, compared to some other brands I've tried, the Answer ones can be hard to follow. Chances are good since you did the deed that night that you are on target. Typically you want to introduce sperm between 12-36 hours of a positive, keeping in mind the sperm can live for a few days (especially that female sperm). Best of luck to you!!

After much searching and very close eyeballing, i have decided that my OPK's are not positives. I read that with the answer brand (which sucks but is also the brand I have) are kind of unreliable. I noticed that my test looks half positive and so i found out that the dark part has to be 50% or more of the total line to be considered pos. if it's uner 50% of the line, then you have to go by the lighter shade, and after careful examining, I can see that mine is well uner the 50% mark and the other part seems to be lighter then the control line. So I think I still have a few days.(which is a relief so I can actually bd on O day!) I am going to try to go get a diff. brand of OPK's later today and see if I can get better results. As well as BD everyday because I don't want to miss it! I read that clear plan is a good brand to use. Any suggestions from personal use?

13. My test line looks "half positive"-- only one side of the line is dark. What does it mean? Most of the time, OPK results are easy to read; the "result" line is one uniform color/darkness. Sometimes, however, you may get a result that looks "half positive," like this:

"control" line on right
When this happened to me, I contacted the distributor (in this case, BabyWishes.org)-- I even e-mailed them the above photo. I was told that the darkest part of the "result" line should be compared with the test line, and that this applies to all brands of OPK's.
This month I purchased some Answer brand OPK's, which I had never personally used before. After my LH surge appeared to last 6 days (going by the above rule of thumb), I made the unsettling discovery that my tap water was also ovulating. So I called Answer's 800# and asked the same question. This time I was told that the dark part of the line must be at least 50% of the total width to be considered positive. Going by THAT, the picture above would be considered negative. (And, in retrospect, my LH surge actually lasted a common 2 days-- and my kitchen faucet is not currently fertile.)
So, it appears that my information from BabyWishes was incorrect; it does, in fact, depend on the brand of OPK.
