So I've been off BCP since July and started temping/charting immediately. Since then, I've only had 3 cycles and the last two I didnt O until at least CD 29 on both. My husband and I just started trying this past month and I decided to call the doctor to see what I could do about regulating my cycles, so I O

That is funny that she said tempting doesn't work and to only use OPK's because last week I went to my Ob/gyn and she said the complete opposite. I showed her my charts and she said to just continue to chart my temps and not to waste my money on anymore OPK's.

I have the opposite problem as you my cycles are short. My Dr. wanted me to chart a couple more cycles then said she will put me on clomid.

I think that you should wait and talk to your Dr. about your cycles and not worry to much about what the nurse said. In my experience of talking to nurses at Dr. offices is that they don't know that much and shouldn't be giving out medical advise before a Dr. has seen you and knows your specific circumstances.

hi -

i just came across this thread and thought i would join in. i just saw my primary doc (who's a woman and has 3 kids, 5, 3 and 1 yr). my FDH and i are TTC and this is our second cycle. i've never heard of temping until i joined the boards. i asked her how i would know if either of us had fertility issues and what's the best way to time sex for conception. she told me that in ideal circumstances, with everyone healthy and you have perfect timing BD, each couple still only has an 18% chance of conceiving. (stressing that the egg only survives from 12 - 24 hours, so there is only a very little window to conceive once a month)she then told me if we don't conceive in 6 months, then she would do a small work up (normally it's a year but i'm 33 and really want to get started on our family).

then i mentioned temping, charting etc. and she said the same thing - it's not that temping doesnt work, she said temping is incredibly difficult to get accurate reads. she said you have to temp the same time every day without fail. also, if you have alcohol the night before, or even some kinds of meds, it can throw everything off. i have a 26 - 29 day cycle. she recommended opk, which she says are a great tool to use because they can really help pinpoint ovulation better than temping, and to have sex once a day on days 11 - 14 (based on my cycle length.) and to also start using the opk on day 6 until i get a positive, in case i ovulate early.

another thing she stressed was EWCM - if the sperm doesnt have an optimal living enviroment, then it can die within a few hours and never reach the egg. but in the right condition, the sperm can live between 3 - 5 but in some cases a week! so she recommended pre seed on those days.

i haven't tried temping because it doesnt fit in my lifestyle at the moment (schedule is too hectic to take the same time each day) so i've done the opk and pre seed this cycle to see how it goes. all said and done, i think whatever makes you comfortable in your experience to conceive i would go for. ultimately, it all comes down to timing i think.

oh well, just thought i would pass the info on.

Yea I'm thinking I just need to hold out to Jan to talk to the dr herself. Its so hard to be patient with all this, but thanks for your advice and encouragement! If only we could all just have regular cycles!

Thanks for the post! I would do the OPKs, but since my cycles are so long, I would have to do them contiuosly for who knows how long! I might still try them, but really, thats a lot of money to keep doing them until I O...which is around CD 30 or so!

Temping works okay for me since I get up everytime the same day and even on weekends I wake up, temp, then go back to sleep. I mean I'm open to trying different things, but its so hard to know what to do since everyone has such different opinions!

I've only been off the pill since July and we just literally started trying last cycle, so I'm sure things will work out soon enough. It usually happens to people who arent really trying...so maybe I should throw in the towel on everything. Ha!

hi -

i completely hear what you're saying about the OPK. you end up staring at the thing wondering when it's going to turn positive. and it sounds like temping it perfect for you (getting up at the same time). sounds like your reads couldnt get any more accurate than they are.

i was just saying this to my girlfriend the other day - we try all our lives NOT to get pregnant and when we want to, time couldnt possibly go any slower. my FDH and i have been having unprotected sex since july but just started to actively try last month. (and i feel like it's already been forever).

your doc knows best - and i know things will work out!

That is not true, they are just giving info that is like blanket advice - most people would not have enough information or initiative to temp correctly, and it is just easier for a medical person to tell an average person to use a commercial test.

Just like when they say you are pregnant from the time of your last menstrual period (LMP) instead of from true ovulation/conception - because most people do not know when that is, but most people DO know when their LMP was, so it is a blanket method. kwim? So my baby is 5 weeks old, but the OB sould say it is 7. Same difference.

Anyway, about your cycles - this can happen, a LONG cycle as your fertility returns. happens to me after childbirth. Take some extra b vitamins, b6 and b 12, and it may help you regulate faster. I take 100 mg b6 to help me, i dont know how much b12 is nec;ry, go ahead and google about it or ask your OB. I did. (hopefully they are better than this lady was, i am not sure if this was your or your OB or your MD)

Yea, it is definitely crazy how we go our whole lives (ok not whole) avoiding, then when we are trying, it seems to take forever. Although, ever since we started trying I seem to notice so many unplanned pregnancies. But thats just my mind being mean to me...haha.

I have been taking a prenatal for a couple months now and I just started on B6 this morning! It seems like things are "ok" (it does look like I ovulate and my lp seem to be about 12-14days), it just takes awhile longer for it all to happen. I do remember having long and irregular cycles before getting on the pill, so thats probably what my body is going back to.

So B6 should help regulate? I kinda had some low temps last cycle after O'ing, so I read that taking B6 can help that.

Thanks everyone!
