I wrote down the pertinent #'s from my chart at the Dr's this morning from DHs s/a. I think it looks okay....not great, just alright. What do you think?

29 million qty

43 motility (not great)

60 morphology

The 43 and 60 are percentages, right? It's my understanding that 50% for both mot. and morph. are what you want, right? What can we do to increase motility? Coffee? Can you say to stop smoking, cause I'd really like to give him a good reason to stop(like there aren't enough good reasons-lol). I think 29 million is okay but not great too, right? The nurse says that over 20 mill. is good.

Thanks for your help with this!

Tara:

I worked with infertlity patients for 6 years (about 10years ago) How ironic is that??? Anyway, one of my jobs were to perform SA's. This is what we were taught to be within the normal limits. I hope this helps. AND YES!!!!!!!!! Smoking can causes motility to go DOWN! tell him to stop smoking right now!!!

The normal volume varies from 1.5 to 5.0 milliliter per ejaculation. The sperm count varies from 20 to 150 million sperm per milliliter. At least 60% of the sperm should have a normal shape and show normal forward movement (motility).

* Motility (sometimes referred to as the "mobility"):

This describes the percentage of sperm which are moving. 50% or more of the sperm should be moving.

* Morphology:

This describes the shape of the sperm. The sperm are examined under a microscope and must meet specific sets of criteria for several sperm characteristics in order to be considered normal. Most commercial laboratories will report WHO morphology (i.e. use World Health Organization criterion). 30% of the sperm should be normal by these criteria

So I would say I agree with you, while it's not a great report, it certainly does not mean he is infertile. Did they suggest a repeat in 6 months if you are still TTC? If you can get your DH to stop smoking, maybe, IF NEEDED (I pray you don't) to repeat it again in 6 motnhs to check his motilty.

Again, I hope this helps.

Actually smoking is a BIG deal when it comes to fertility. Can he stop temporarily?

Here's a link I found (I'm sure there are way more on the subject):

http://my.webmd.com/content/article/50/40526.htm

I had heard over 20 mil is good. So he's got plenty of "boys." But in order to make them healthier, he needs to live healthier. What does the dr. say about the other numbers? I don't know what they mean, as we haven't gone down that road yet.

Best of luck!

Thank-you Jona! I havn't spoken with the Dr yet...I have to wait until the end of this investigative cycle. I jsut grabbed the #s off the chart so I could ask you gals for help- the nurses won't tell me anything, they just say to wait for the Dr. I'm not that patient!

Tara:

You are so very welcome. If you I can help in any other way, just let me know. Also, not that you would ever need it, and while writing this, I know you will never need it. There is something called a SWCC (sperm washing capacitation with caffiene) it helps to speed up the motility and it mainly used in conjunction with AI procedures. But do not get confused and think caffiene, such as coffee, Mt.Dew are good for his swimmers if ingested........they are not, try to limit his intake if possible.

Wish you all the best and keep me posted.
