My sister is having what I think to be a serious problem...please let me know if any of you are going through the same ordeal or if you know anyone that this has happened to or just reply with you thoughts...

For the past 5 years she has not been having regular periods. They come very irregular for example, she had her last period in June and just had her next AF started yesterday. Her AF lasts for 2-3 weeks of which then she mentions that she feels very worn out and tired. she has never been on the birth control pill and she is terrified to go to the doctor because she does not want to hear any negative news.

Please let me know if anyone here can relate I am very concerned for her.

Thanks for your help in advance,

Stephanie

I agree with you in that she needs to see a doc, however, it may not be all that serious. They will probably want to put her on the pill to regulate her and if that doesnt help they may try something else, but dont worry, it may not be anything to worry about at all. I had the same prob and it was endo but a little out patient surgery can fix that, it my case it was the Lord! DONT WORRY! Tell her she needs to go, but that she shouldnt worry about it.

She's probably not ovulating because her periods are so long so it builds up over a long time and then takes a while to shed itself. She should definitely try to regulate herself as she'll probably feel a lot better to have a more normal cycle.

Stephanie,

I went through the same thing at age 16. My doc put me on birth control pills to regulate my cycle. Once I stopped the pills when ttc, my cycles were still irregular. I discovered that I was not ovulating very often, which caused the lack of periods. Your sister should see her doctor and figure out what the problem is. I'm sure it's not serious, though.

ok first of all this is weird i have a sister named stephanie and our other sister has the same problem except i dont think shes trying to get pg it could be stress on her body thats causing her cycles to be messed up or it could be nothing at all but she shouldnt wait to long to go to the doctors in case there is a problem and maybe the doctor can help her regulate af.

Tell her that this is VERY VERY VERY VERY Common! Sounds like she needs some meds to get balanced. I went through the very same thing recently. She just needs to go to the dr and they will get her all fixed up.

She is probably tired because of the long menstrual cycles and she is probably a little anemic (sp?) because of it.

The sooner she see's the Dr, the sooner she will relax.

I agree with everyone else - your sister should probably see her doctor about her irregular periods. Chances are, she's not ovulating regularly. I don't know if she's TTC right now or not; a common practice in these situations is for the doctor to simply prescribe BCP. Her cycles on BCP should be regular.

If she wants to TTC either someday soon or just someday, there may be some more diagnostic procedures that should be run. As many as 10% of women are estimated to suffer from PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), a condition which can cause anovulation, really long or irregular cycles, and abnormal vaginal bleeding (I think 2-3 week AFs qualify). While this sounds like a scary diagnosis, it's really not; with medical advances and everything from insulin-related medications to Clomid, women with PCOS can go on to have healthy children like anyone else. I know your sister is probably scared right now - none of us like to hear "bad" news - but seeing a doctor and getting an appropriate diagnosis is always a step in the right direction.

For more info on PCOS, there are some great sites you might want to check out before you talk to your sister:
